According to several sources (Google, dictionary.com, etc.), the word was (developed?) in the mid-30's as a way to write (probably to shorten) Master of Ceremonies.
As for your question of, "Why do we have a separate word now?", I guess you'd have to ask why we need 2 or more words for anything: ie. Couch, sofa or divan?
Guess it boils down to personal preference and/or expediency.
