Assemblyman Hawley hosts free electronic recycling event Saturday in Batavia

By Billie Owens

Press release:

Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R,C,I-Batavia) will host a free electronic recycling event on Saturday, April 9, in the parking lot of 5130 E. Main St. in Batavia. The location is next to National Grid.

Residents are encouraged to do the right thing for the environment with their old e-waste and properly recycle it with Hawley’s help.

“Going green has become more popular in recent years, and this event offers residents the opportunity to properly dispose of their old electronic waste in a way that doesn’t damage our environment,” Hawley said.

“Things like old desktop computers and fax machines are steadily being phased out in favor of more compact technology, so this event can also serve as early spring cleaning and a way to get rid of old, bulky junk. I encourage all of my constituents to bring their old cell phones, computers, monitors, printers and any other electronic waste on Saturday and do the right thing by recycling.”

One word of advice

Before you recycle ANY personal computer, remove the hard drive and physically destroy it by drilling multiple holes in it or smashing it with a sledge hammer.

If you don't do this, you run the risk of your identity being compromised as this hard drive could end up anywhere and your personal information could be removed and used.

Dave, that is sound advice. Heck, I bet Hillary approves of this method of destroying any personal info being compromised. Lol. Come on - I'm only having a little fun & I just couldn't resist the irony:). It's all good right?

TV's and monitors USED to be free to recycle at ARC -they changed that over a year ago-I think they charge 40 cents a pound for the TV's,which is BS. I don't understand why Genesee County can't set up a spot (like at the highway dept. on Cedar St.) that allows residents to drop off their old electronics.Orleans County is able to- 9am-2pm M-F at their highway dept.in Albion. They make all these goddamn laws for disposing of electronics then make it as difficult as possible to try and get rid of them...... hopefully Mr. Hawley can convince Genesee County set up a recycling spot for electronics that's FREE to county residents on a permanent basis, rather than once or twice a year....

Bob, where did you get the idea dropping off items at a government site was free? Who do you think is going to pay to sort the items and who is going to pay to take them away?

You buy things that have negative environmental effects (mercury in TVs, etc), then as any good libertarian would appreciate your need to pay for the disposal of those negative effects.

It's not rocket science folks... just like bottles and cans... if there is a "redemption" refund, there won't be TVs, microwaves, VCRs, etc, in the garbage, or along the roadside. People can be trained to do almost anything.

John-I believe Orleans County paid a contract to a recycler (not sure if it was Sunnking or not) for a year(I think it was between $10k-$20k). I see the drop-off site in Albion behind the county buildings ,w/a sign out front stating hours for drop off. I'm not sure what publication had the story-it could've been the Hub or Daily News.I may stop by there and ask about it....
