The seizure of property and
The seizure of property and sale by any government for non-payment of taxes is wrong and immoral. Ownership of a property in no way reflects a persons ability to pay, but however your house or property is assessed based on a subjective opinion of its value and therefor you are expected to pay tax based on that value (which as we all know has nothing to do with the actual market value of the property). People in all manner of circumstance can be property owners. They may have paid off the home and are now retired, but will still be expected to pay tax based on the home's value. Their income can change, as we have seen throughout the past 8 years or so, they may inherit a home, which has sentimental value to them. In every instance, the local government decides how much you should pay and threatens to take it away f you don't pay. How do we improve the community of this county by attracting families to own the homes they live in (a proven factor for raising the profile of any area) if we tell them that any improvements made, any increase in value of the area will result in higher taxes and if you can't pay, your home will be seized and sold.? That's a rhetorical question, obviously we can't. Alternate Methods of funding government and alternatives to providing services need to be explored. The feudal practice of seizing one's property and the threat of violence and imprisonment if you resist must end. We can do better. Food is considered a basic requirement and so is not taxed, is not shelter a basic need? Genesee County has led in many areas through out our long, proud history. We can do it again. If we want to.
