A car has struck a utility pole and a 500-gallon diesel fuel tank on Batavia-Stafford Townline Road near R. Steven Hawley Drive.

The tank, on a farm at the location, was ruptured at a seam and was leaking fuel. The leak is now stopped.

The driver is out of the vehicle and walking around.

Both Stafford Fire Department (the accident is in the Stafford district) and Town of Batavia fire have responded.

UPDATE 4:56 a.m.: A fuel specialist from a local fuel company requested to the scene to help drain the remaining 200 to 300 gallons of fuel in the tank. Also, dispatch asked to contact the father of the driver. "Let him know (his son) is OK. He just needs a ride home."

The road is  being kept open.

A snowmobiler has struck a tree on a trail just north of 2274 Angling Road. East Pembroke Fire Department is responding along with Mercy medics.

The victim is unable to get off the trail.

UPDATE 6:35 p.m.: Mercy Flight status to fly is requested and the caller is told it is unable to fly.

UPDATE 6:38 p.m.: The victim is said to be off the trail, and an emergency responder is "taking a snowmobile to the accident."

UPDATE 6:40 p.m.: A Mercy Flight helicopter out of Buffalo has been started toward the accident scene. A landing zone is to be established at Pembroke School.

UPDATE 6:58 p.m.: Mercy Flight says it's two minutes away from landing. The pilot is told the victim seems to have only internal injuries and is awaiting their arrival inside the ambulance.

UPDATE 7:13 p.m: East Pembroke Fire Department and Mercy medics are back in service. Presumably, the victim is being taken to Strong Memorial Hospital.

 A two-car accident with a possible minor injury is blocking the eastbound lane of West Main Street, Le Roy.

One subject is complaining of a possible arm injury.

The accident occured in the area of 70 West Main St.

Le Roy Fire and Ambulance responding. 

A different car accident in the same location as one just awhile ago has been reported in the vicinity of 6945 Byron Road in Byron. There are injuries, however, in this incident.

The vehicle veered off the roadway. Byron Fire Department was headed back to quarters after handling the earlier accident when this call came in. The crew turned around and went back to the location. Mercy medics are also on scene. Fire police being sent in to shut down traffic.

UPDATE 5:20 p.m.: Byron fire is back in service. There are two female victims and both are being taken to UMMC.

A car has struck trees at 6945 Byron Road in Byron. Law enforcement on scene requests evaluation of the driver.

Byron Fire Department and Mercy BLS are responding.

UPDATE 4:38: Byron fire went back in service after a patient sign-off for this accident.

UPDATE 3:50 p.m.: The Genesee County Sheriff's Department has released the victims' names in this morning's two-vehicle head-on collision in the vicinity of 3837 W. Main St. Road, Town of Batavia.

Killed at the scene was 19-year-old Delores Opuku-Boateng, who was a passenger in a 1999 Honda sedan driven by 21-year-old Levert R. Kimble. Both of them were ejected from the vehicle upon impact.

Kimble was taken to ECMC with serious injuries. Mercy Flight was not available for unknown reasons this morning.

The driver of the other vehicle, a 1995 Chevy SUV, was Justin J. Jaszko, 31. He suffered a leg injury and was taken to UMMC.

According to investigators, the accident occurred at 9:02 a.m. when Kimble apparently lost control of his eastbound Honda and crossed over the center of the road, striking Jaszko's westbound SUV.

Assisting at the scene were the volunteer fire departments of the Town of Batavia and East Pembroke and the Batavia City Police Department.

The investigation continues by the following individuals: Deputy John Duyssen, Deputy Lonnie Nati, Investigator Kristopher Kautz, Investigator Timothy Weis, Sgt. William Scott, Sgt. James Meier and Sgt. Steven Mullen.

At this point, no charges have been made.

Deputy Chief Gordon Dibble said it's too early in the investigation to say what factor weather or speed played in the accident.

"We just don't know about speed," Dibble said. "We have two or three eyewitnesses and they will help us. Obviously, the road conditions are what they are. We have winter road conditions."

A person has been ejected from a vehicle in an accident in the area of 3842 W. Main St. Road, Town of Batavia.

There are at least two serious injuries and possibly more.

Mercy Flight is unavailable.

Batavia Fire and Mercy EMS responding.

Batavia Police requested to shut down all westbound traffic.

UPDATE 9:14 a.m.: All eastbound traffic is shut down at Route 5 and Wortendyke Road. A third ambulance is called for. East Pembroke Fire Department is called to assist. A flatbed tow truck and another tow are called for.

UPDATE 9:30 a.m.: A man with minor injuries is being transported to UMMC. His grandfather had just arrived at the scene and was advised of this.

UPDATE 9:34 a.m.: The city's police chaplain is called to the scene. He is closer than the Sheriff's chaplain.

UPDATE 9:40 a.m.: There is one fatality. A victim is being transported to Erie County Medical Center.

UPDATE: As of 11 a.m., West Main Street Road reopened in both directions.

A one-car rollover accident with entrapment has been reported on the Thruway in the area of mile marker 400.7 in the eastbound lane.

Pembroke Fire and Indian Falls Fire responding.

UPDATE: When firefighters arrived, the driver was out of the vehicle and walking around.

UPDATE 11:12 p.m.: Another vehicle is apparently off the road about a mile west of the first accident.

A car-into-pole accident has occurred at 453 N. Byron Road. The location is between Lockport and Miller roads. No injuries reported.

Elba Fire Department is responding. Mercy medics on scene determined no injuries were apparent, left, and now are asked to return in non-emergency mode.

UPDATE 8:16 p.m.: A firefighter reports that the pole involved, No. 4596, is cracked and National Grid should look at it, but it doesn't required immediate attention. A previous responder said the pole was "split in a few places."

Two of Genesee County's young people seriously hurt in accidents this week remain hospitalized.

Cassandra Koepp, 17, injured in an accident on Wortendyke Road on Wednesday afternoon, remains in guarded condition at Strong Memorial Hospital. Strong lists all patients in the intensive care unit as "guarded."

Jordan Paul Fleming, 22, who had his legs seriously injured when his car hit a tree on East Bethany-Le Roy Townline Road on Thursday is listed in satisfactory condition at Strong.

Predictably, the weather is creating hazardous road conditions. There are at least four accidents now -- and cars have careened off the roads in several other places countywide.

One car is well off the road on the westbound 490 at the Bergen exit.

Another accident is reported on the Thruway at mile marker 399.9, eastbound. Pembroke and Indian Falls fire departments responded. Air-bag deployment, no injuries.

Alabama Fire Department is responding to an accident on Alleghany Road, just south of Ham Road. Car, with heavy front-end damage, and a tractor-trailer.

Route 5 overpass of the Thruway. Driver only, no injuries, heavy front-end damage.

A one-car rollover accident is reported on the Thruway, eastbound at mile marker 398.8. East Pembroke Fire Department and Mercy EMS are responding. There are injuries, but their severity is unknown.

Callers say responders should use caution upon approach since there are reportedly people running across the roadway to the accident scene.

UPDATE 3 p.m.: A responder says the accident is not a rollover.

UPDATE 3:01 p.m.: Apparently there are two separate incidents. One car is off the roadway at mile marker 398. A half mile eastward, a black SUV was overturned, but is now right-side up. The occupants are out and seem to have suffered lacerations only.

A three-car accident has been reported at East Main and Cedar streets.

It is believed to be property-damage only at this point.

A driver who was pulling out of the Arby's drive-thru exit on West Main Street apparently had her van roll in front of a westbound tractor-trailer.

The truck spun the van around, onto the sidewalk and into the front of an office building.

It's unknown at this point if the driver was unable to stop on ice or if she failed to yield the right-of-way.

The trucker drove on to the Tops Market parking lot where he reportedly felt it was safer to stop than on West Main Street.

Batavia Police and Fire responded along with Mercy EMS.

UPDATE: The driver of the van was Patricia A. Tomaszewski, 74, of Dodgeson Road, Alexander. Sgt. John Peck said Tomaszewski allegedly failed to yield the right-of-way and was issued a citation. He said her van struck the right rear axle of the trailer. The truck driver was John L. Kinnaird, 58, of Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada. Kinnaird was cited for allegedly driving on a suspended license.

UPDATED Feb. 4, 12:37 a.m.

Crews from Bethany and Stafford volunteer fire departments worked for more than an hour and 15 minutes to extricate an accident victim from his car on East Bethany-Le Roy Townline Road this afternoon.

The victim, Jordan Paul Fleming, 22, of East Bethany-Le Roy Townline Road, East Bethany, appears to have suffered leg injuries, according to Bethany's 2nd Assistant Chief John Szymkowiak. 

Fleming was taken by Mercy Flight to Strong Memorial Hospital.

The 1996 Mercedes sedan passed through a slushy part of the roadway, slid off the pavement and struck a tree on the front driver's side, according to the accident investigation report. The force of the impact collapsed the front of the car, including steering wheel and column onto the driver's legs.

The car essentially had to be dismantled into order to extricate Fleming.

One veteran firefighter described the extrication as the toughest he's ever been involved in.

Szymkowiak requested mutual aid from Stafford to help with the extrication.

UPDATE 12:34 p.m.: Responder requests Mercy Flight to the scene. Serious injuries reported.

UPDATE 12:37 p.m.: Stafford Fire Department is called in for mutual aid.

UPDATE 12:42 p.m.: The "jaws of life" are called for to extricate the driver, who is the sole victim.

UPDATE 1:36 p.m.: The male victim has yet to be extricated and they are working diligently to do so. The car's roof has been removed in the process. The car's front end is heavily damaged.

UPDATE 1:45 p.m.: The man has been extricated from his vehicle.

UPDATE 2:08 p.m.: Mercy Flight is airborne, heading to Strong Memorial Hospital. Alexander is released from standby.

UPDATE 2:17 p.m.: Bethany fire units are back in service. The site is being cleaned up and the roadway reopened.

An 17-year-old Alexander girl was seriously injured in a two-car accident on Wortendyke Road, Alexander, at 4:20 p.m.

Cassandra R. Koepp was transported by ground ambulance to Strong Memorial Hospital.

Justin Neureuter, 22, of Corfu, who was not injured, was cited for alleged failure to keep right, no seatbelt and aggravated unlicensed operation, 3rd.

Neureuter was reportedly driving northbound on Wortendyke when his car crossed the center line and was struck by a car driven by Deborah D. Buckenmeyer, 54, of Attica.

Buckenmeyer was not injured.

Koepp was a passenger in Neureuter's vehicle. Alexander firefighters needed to extricate her from the car.

Alexander fire crews were on scene until 9 p.m. providing traffic control during the investigation.

First responders reported icy road conditions in the area.

A two-car accident with injuries, possibly serious ones, is reported at Wortendyke and Dodgeson Roads. Mercy Flight is called but unable to fly due to weather conditions.

Alexander Fire Department and Mercy EMS are responding.

UPDATE 4:29 p.m.: A responder says "If you're coming around the corner at Goodman Road, be careful -- it's nothing but a sheet of ice." A fireman says a person involved in the accident "is barely breathing." They also need to employ the jaws for extrication. Authorities are asked to control and/or close traffic at Wortendyke and Rose Pike roads.

UPDATE 4:38 p.m.: Traffic at Wortendyke and Dodgeson is being shut down.

UPDATE 4:42 p.m.: A teenage girl involved in the accident has a respiratory rate (breaths per minute) of 12, which is within normal range. They are unable to get her out and expect it will be at least 15 minutes before they can.

UPDATE 5:37 p.m.: One victim was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital at least 20 minutes ago. No word on the teenage girl's extrication. A young man involved in the accident has both parents and an uncle on scene with him.

UPDATE 5:55 p.m.: Media trying to access the scene are stopped by a State Trooper who says "This is a crime scene."

UPDATE 6:13 p.m.: An Alexander fire unit has returned to the hall.

UPDATE 9:14 p.m.: As of about 9 p.m., all Alexander units back in service and the road is reopened.

A two-car accident with minor injuries is reported at Vine and Bank Street in the City of Batavia.

Batavia Fire Department and a Mercy ambulance are responding.

One person suffered a minor injury Saturday after a car pulling out of a business on Ellicott Street Road reportedly struck her car as she tried to avoid it.

William B. Heany, 74, of East Main Street, Batavia, told a Sheriff's Deputy that he didn't see the headlights of a car driven by Victoria Lee Wood, 40, of Pavilion Center Road, Pavilion, as he pulled from the parking lot of 4818 Ellicott Street Road, Batavia.

The accident occurred at 8:27 p.m.

Lee, who said her headlights were on, was transported by ambulance to UMMC.

No citations are listed on the accident report.

The accident was investigated by Deputy Patrick Reeves.
