Kiwanis Club's 53rd annual Pancake Day

The Kiwanis Club of Batavia will hold its 53rd annual Pancake Day breakfast from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27, the First Presbyterian Church Service Building (corner of Main and Liberty streets).

The meal is fully served and includes all-you-can-eat pancakes, sausage and beverages.

Cost is $5 adults, $3 for children 10 and under, $3 for seniors 62 and older.

But children under 10 wearing costumes (and accompanied by an adult) eat free!

Local author signs her historical late-1700s romance 'Love's Guardian' at Coffee Culture

Local author Dawn Ireland will sign copies of her book, “Love’s Guardian” at Coffee Culture from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6. She will have a limited supply of her books on hand, and visitors may stop by to talk with her about writing, or fill out an entry slip for a “romantic basket” drawing.

"Love’s Guardian" is a historical romance set in England’s Georgian Era" (late 1700s) The “Dangerous Liason’s” timeframe is the perfect backdrop for a very improbable love story.

Ribbon-cutting ceremony for Alexander Central School's outdoor classroom -- public invited

Alexander Elementary School invites the public to a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new outdoor classroom on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 10 a.m.

There will be a 15- to 20-minute period of opening remarks, followed by the ribbon-cutting itself. People can then wander the classroom trails and explore. There is no set time for this -- it will depend on the weather, the turnout and people's own preferences.

Presented by GCC History instructor Dan Hamner in the Stuart Steiner Theater.

GCC free lecture on the role of climate and topography in the Civil War

Lecture: "The Search for Good Ground and Fair Weather: The Role of Climate and Topography in the Civil War." Wednesday, Oct. 3, Batavia Campus, 7 p.m.

Presented by Aaron Wheeler, Ph.D., of Capital Community College.

It's free and takes place in the Stuart Steiner Theater. The college is located at One College Road, off R. Stephen Hawley Drive.

OA varsity volleyball team holds game to benefit breast cancer research

The Oakfield-Alabama Hornets Volleyball Team will be hosting a Dig Pink Volleyball game at 5:30 p.m.on Friday, Oct. 5. The varsity match starts at 6.

There will be a 50/50 raffle, serving contest, and refreshments. Admission to the game will be donation only. All proceeds will go to the Side Out Foundation to support breast cancer research.

Open house at Batavia career and tech education center

An Open House and Skilled Trades Fair will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 11 at the Batavia Career and Technical Education Center.

Free health screenings for uninsured county residents

United Memorial Medical Center will conduct FREE health screenings for the uninsured at the Jerome Center, 16 Bank St. Batavia, from 2-8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 18.

This event is for uninsured Genesee County residents between the ages of 40 and 64. Healthcare providers will also provide free mammograms, pap smears and clinical breast exams for women and prostate screening exams for men. Additional screenings services provided at the event will include blood sugar testing, total cholesterol and take home colorectal cancer screening kits.

LA's Garrison Starr to perform at Batavia Players fundraiser along with Adrianne Gonzalez

Eighteen months ago, L.A. singer-songwriter Garrison Starr came to Batavia and volunteered her time at three separate events. Everyone enjoyed the music, the stories, and Garrison herself.

At 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6, she returns to the Harvester 56 Theater. And she's bringing fellow musician Adrianne Gonzalez of The Rescues with her!

GCC's 'Bringing Back the '80s' for 3rd Annual Homecoming

There's something for EVERYONE at Genesee Community College's 3rd Annual Homecoming weekend Sept. 28-29 -- for alumni, students, staff and the community!

We're "Bringin' Back the '80s" with hair bands and Harleys on Friday night. Check out the gleaming chrome of some monster hogs and enjoy the high-stepping moves of the Cougarettes Cheer and Dance Teams. It all starts at 5 p.m. Live music gets under way at 6:30 p.m. with Four Dead Trees, Noah's Reign, Poison'd (Poison tribute) and Red, White and Crue (Motley Crue covers).

Free Pasta for Peace dinner with pastor Roula Alkhouri on 'Syria Today'

Roula Alkhouri, pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Batavia, will be the featured speaker at the Pasta for Peace free spaghetti dinner, beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 11, at First Presbyterian Church, 300 E. Main St. in Batavia.

The program is sponsored by Pax Christi Genesee County. Her subject will be “Syria Today."

Cornell Cooperative Extension Annual Meeting

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Genesee County will hold its annual meeting at 5 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 15. The event will be held at City Slickers Bar & Grill (in the lower level lounge).

City Slickers is located at 59 Main St. in Batavia. Light refreshments will be served.

The business portion of the meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m .with election of officers, constitution amendments and recognition of staff and volunteers. The meeting is open to the public.

The Museum Quilt Guild's biennial quilt show -- named "Stitches in Time" this year -- takes place this weekend at the Alexander Fireman's Recreation Hall, at 10708 Alexander Road/Route 98 in Alexander.

Times are as follows:

  • Friday, Oct. 19 - 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Saturday, Oct. 20 - 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Admission is $5, and tickets can be purchased at the Farmers Market at the Batavia Downs parking lot (at 8315 Park Road in Batavia) from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Fridays.

Kids' Halloween Party at Richmond library -- wear your costumes!

Come join us at the Richmond Memorial Library for a fun-filled Halloween Party at 6:30 p.m. on Monday Oct. 29 downstairs in the Children’s Room.

Story Teller Rick Merritt will be performing a special Halloween campfire program for children of all ages. Snacks and crafts will be provided. Children are encouraged to wear their costumes!

Jell-O museum curator to speak on fairs in 19th Century farm towns

The Wednesday, Sept. 26, monthly membership meeting of the Stafford Historical Society will be featuring the well-known Lynn Belluscio, curator of the Le Roy Historical Society and the Jell-0 Gallery Museum.

She will present a program, "Recreation and Inroads in Entertainment at Early Agricultural Fairs," giving the history of a system developed by Mr. Elkanah Watson that allowed the 19th Century farm communities to hold fairs. It had grew into a system of programs and events that included the whole family.

BHS Class of '87 holds informal reunion at Terry Hills

The Batavia High School Class of 1987 is having its 25-year reunion this Friday, Sept. 21 from 5 to 11 p.m. at Terry Hills. We are having an informal event, no need to register, just show up anytime and have a good time.

Preschool Story Time at Woodward Memorial Library

John Kennedy Intermediate School invites families and students to Community Night

John Kennedy Intermediate School will be hosting its annual Community Night on from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 14 in the gymnasium.

Last year 23 businesses/associations participated. This free event is sponsored by the John Kennedy Parent Group and it's their first event of the year – where students and their parents are welcomed back to JK, along with new students and their families.
