Salvation Army's free annual Summer Block Party

The Salvation Army would like to invite the community to its free annual Summer Block Party to be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 5. The location is 529 E. Main St. (across from Tulley's Restaurant).

There will be games, hot dogs, snow cones, dodge ball, basketball and prizes. Parents will also be able to sign up their children for the Summer Super Sparks program.

Clor's chicken BBQ to benefit last graduating class of Le Roy's Holy Family School

A chicken BBQ to benefit the last graduating class of eighth-graders from Holy Family School (Class of 2012) in Le Roy will be held at Clor's Meat Market in Batavia on Sunday, June 24.

The dinner costs $9 and includes: barbecued chickem, salt potatoes and cole slaw. It will be available from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. (or 'til sold out). Clor's is located at 4169 W. Main St. Road.

Holy Family School closes at the end of this academic year.

Annual chamber golf outing at Stafford County Club: payment deadline July 16

The 40th annual Genesee County Chamber of Commerce Golf Outing at Stafford Country Club is set for Monday, July 30.

Cost is $120 per golfer. Dinner only is $30 -- bring your spouse, coworkers, colleagues and friends. Reservations will not be made without payment. They must be made through the chamber office by calling 343-7440 or faxing 343-7487.

Payment deadline is Monday, July 16.

Big three-day garage sale to benefit shelter animals

A big, three-day garage sale is planned by Volunteers for Animals, with all proceeds going to benefit the animals at the Genesee County Animal Shelter.

The sale will be held at 54 River St. in Batavia from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday June 14-16.

This week's movie is "Hugo." An orphaned boy secretly lives in the walls of a busy Paris train station and looks after the clocks. He gets caught up in a mystery adventure and when he attempts to repair a mechanical man.

CANCELLED DUE TO WEATHER: Ghost tours of Batavia Cemetery, psychic readings

The Batavia Cemetery Association, in conjunction with the Genesee County History Department, will host a guided ghost walk through the Historic Batavia Cemetery on Harvester Avenue from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 2.

The tours will feature some of the finest ladies who ever graced the community. Guests will meet the late, great women of Batavia who, for various reasons, held great power and exerted great influence in their day.

Trombonist Derek Reiss & his jazz group Dizzy perform in Centennial Park

The Batavia Concert Band will end its 88th season with a performance at *7 p.m. in Centennial Park featuring trombonist Derek Reissand his jazz group Dizzy.

The concert is free to the public of all ages. Light refreshments are usually available. Bring the family, some friends, lawn chairs or a blanket … and enjoy!

Art demo on watercolor with watercolor crayons at GO-ART!

June 1 is registration deadline for demo on cooking with solar ovens

Cooking with Solar Ovens - "How Lo-Tech Can Be High Impact" 

Join Janis Colby for an interesting and educational hands-on demonstration for adults on solar ovens. You will learn how, where, and why they are used today. Participants will make a solar oven to take home. Registration deadline is June 1.

The actual demo is from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, June 9.

Community Action of Orleans & Genesee food distribution at fairgrounds

Community Action of Orleans & Genesee announced that the next surplus food distribution event begins at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 6, at the Kennedy Building at the county fairgrounds. It is located at 5056 E. Main St. Road in the Town of Batavia.

Distribution will take place until the food runs out but no later than 3 p.m. You may pick up food for someone else with a signed permission slip. For questions, please call 343-7798, ext. 116.

Everyone is required to bring:

Proof of residency in the form of a water, gas, electric or telephone bill;

Local artwork on display today at Pembroke High School -- tole painting, Corfu Colorama Art Society pieces

Beginning at 3 this afternoon, the Pembroke Historical Association will display pieces of art from local artists at Pembroke High School in the cafeteria during the school district budget vote.

Featured in the display is a history of the Corfu Colorama Art Society, which was prevalent in the 1950s through the 1960s. More than 40 pieces of art from members of the society will be on display along with items depicting the popular style of tole painting.

The high school is located at 8750 Alleghany Road in Corfu.
