Yannick Murphy, author of 'The Call', speaks at Richmond library

Yannick Murphy, author of the novel "The Call," will speak at Richmond Memorial Library in Batavia beginning at 7 p.m., Thursday,  March 22.

A question-and-answer and book signing follows.

This presentation is part of “A Tale for Three Counties” 2012, the community-reads project for Genesee, Orleans and Wyoming counties. Murphy, whose novel has received multiple starred reviews, will speak at three other locations in the three counties.

Traditional Irish music performed for adults at Richmond library

Book 'The Call' inspires adult craft class at Richmond Library

Richmond Memorial Library is offering “The Call” Craft Challenge Pouch class from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, March 6.

In this class for adults, Jen Reardon will teach how to sew an appliquéd wool felt pouch in an original design inspired by “The Call” by Yannick Murphy.

Info meeting for youth football and cheerleading program planned in Alexander area

Tri-Town Youth Athletics is planning to start a youth football program and has scheduled a meeting for Thursday, Feb. 16 to provide more information to interested parents. It begins at 7 p.m. in the Alexander Elementary School Gym, located at 3314 Buffalo St. between routes 20 and 98.

Tri-Town Youth Athletics primarily serves the Alexander Central School District -- covering Alexander, Darien and Bethany -- but kids from all over the area are welcome to take part. It also offers baseball, softball, basketball and soccer programs.

Richmond library offers free eBook Class, registration required

Richmond Memorial Library in Batavia is offering an eBook Class from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 10. Registration is required for this free class and group size is limited. Call the library at 343-9550, ext. 2, to register.

Participants will learn how to borrow and download eBooks from the library’s website. At 11 a.m., instruction will be given for the Nook, Sony, and Kobo readers. At 12 p.m., instruction will be given for the Kindle.

HLOM February lecture topic: Ely Parker, Seneca chief and Civil War officer

February's topic in the ongoing Holland Land Office Museum lecture series is Ely Parker.

The Seneca chief, known by his people at Do-ne-bo-ga-wa, was a Civil War officer and the writer of the Terms of Surrender at Appomattox Court House.

The presentation about Parker will be made by Terry Abrams, of the Western New York Association of Historical Agencies as well as the Tonawanda Indian Reservation Historical Society.

The lecture begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18, at the museum, located at 131 W. Main St. in the City of Batavia. Phone is 343-4727.

Adult class on how to crochet a necklace at Richmond library

A class for adults on how to crochet a necklace will be offered from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 27, at Richmond Memorial Library.

Learn how to combine wire, beads, and a silver chain to create a necklace in this class taught by Jen Reardon.

An $8 materials fee is due at the time of registration. Participants for this class must know how to chain crochet. Please bring a G crochet hook.

Extreme couponing seminar, plus deals and Chinese auction at YWCA

An event on "extreme couponing" with local "master couponer" Michelle Kelsey will be held this Thursday, Feb. 2, at the YWCA in the City of Batavia. The location is 301 North St.

The free event will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and feature a how-to demonstration, and "cash-and-carry" deals and coupons. There will be a Chinese auction, free refreshments and free child care.

"Come learn the dollar$ and cent$ of couponing."

St. Paul Lutheran School's annual benefit auction

Mark your calendars! The St. Paul Lutheran School Annual Benefit Auction is set for Saturday, Feb. 11. Going once, going twice, SOLD!

Each year St. Paul raises more than $80,000 to provide an affordable Christian education for 3-year-old preschool through fifth-grade students in our community.

The auction will take place in the St. Paul Lutheran School lunchroom (church basement) at 31 Washington Ave., Batavia. Doors open at 4 p.m. and the auctioneer begins at 5.

Chinese auction, pancake breakfast to benefit Byron Fire Department

A Chinese auction and pancake breakfast to benefit the Byron Volunteer Fire Department will be held from 8 a.m. to noon on Sunday, Feb. 19 at the fire hall. It is located on Route 262, just east of Route 237 in the Hamlet of Byron.

St. Joseph's School holds Open House

St. Joseph Catholic School in Batavia will kick off Catholic Schools Week with a family mass at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 29, followed by a family luncheon, followed at 2 p.m. with an open house for prospective students and families. The school is located at 2 Summit St.

The theme for this year's Catholic Schools Week, which is celebrated nationally Jan. 29 through Feb. 5, is "Faith, Academics, Service." These three priorities of Catholic schools stand out from other educational institutions.

Woolly Book Worms meet at Richmond library

Woolly Book Worms will meet at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11, in the Children's Room at Richmond Memorial Library.

This a book discussion group for students in third through fifth grades, accompanied by their favorite adult (feel free to bring a knitting, crocheting or another project to work on).

"The Willoughbys," by Lois Lowery, will be this month's topic.

Light refreshments will be provided.

'Valentine Sweetie' decoration class for adults at Richmond library

A "Valentine Sweetie" decoration class will be offered beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 7 at Richmond Memorial Library.

Learn how to paint a seasonal wall hanging in this class for adults taught by decorative painter Elaine Becker. A $7 materials fee is due at the time of registration.

Optional items to bring include: small sea sponge, small flat or filbert brush, large flat brush, and a good liner brush.

Letting go of clutter is focus of free workshop at Richmond library

“Keep Your Memories, Let Go of the Clutter” is the title of a free workshop beginning at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at Richmond Memorial Library.

Are you ready to finally "let go" of your clutter but don't know how to begin? This fun and informative program will show how to sort between treasures and trash so that you can have the home you've always wanted.

Tips will be provided to help you start--and finish--the process. You also will learn where to send your treasures so they can be enjoyed by others!

Caberet 2012 to benefit St. Jame's church and Community Action

The annual benefit Cabaret is set for 7 to 10 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 11 at St. Jame's Episcopal Church. It's located at 405 E. Main St. in the City of Batavia.

The event is for adults. Cost is $20 and includes desserts and hors d' oeuvres. There will be basket raffles and entertainment by Jon Seiger and Bev Miller.

Proceeds benefit the church's restoration fund and Community Action of Orleans & Genesee. Phone 343-7798 for tickets.
