Pasta dinner and raffle to help ailing seventh-grader

St. James Episcopal Church is having a pasta dinner and basket raffle on Jan. 16 for a seventh-grader who has Hodgkins Lymphoma.

Brandon Johns attends Batavia Middle School and was diagnosed last October. He has gone through a series of powerful chemotherapy sessions and now radiation treatments, all at Strong Hospital in Rochester.

There are so many expenses that insurance does not pay for.

Richmond library offers 'eBook Open House'

Richmond Memorial Library is offering an “eBook Open House” from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28. Anyone interested in learning how to borrow and download library books for their eReader is invited to attend.

Several eReaders will be available for demonstrations. Registration is not required for this drop-in program. The library is located at 9 Ross St., Batavia. More information is available at the library by calling 343-9550, ext. 2. and at www.batavialibrary.org.

O-A school district hosts meeting on bullying

Oakfield-Alabama Central School District is hosting a “town hall style” meeting on bullying beginning at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26 in the middle/high school auditorium. The purpose of the meeting is to educate and engage parents and community about the serious issue of bullying.

The community is invited to learn more about bullying, what our district is doing about it, and what they can do to help. The format of the meeting will consist of a presentation on bullying, current legislation, school programming, various local agencies that can assist, and a Q & A period.

'The Hunger Games' topic of book discussion group at Richmond library

The Adult Book Discussion Group will meet at Richmond Memorial Library on Wednesday, Jan. 11 to discuss "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins. Books are available at the front desk.

Pembroke HS girls' basketball team plays Attica to battle breast cancer

Breast cancer is a life-threatening opponent that has significantly impacted the rural community of Pembroke. As a result, a group of Pembroke High School athletes has decided to challenge the invasive disease by doing what they do best -- playing basketball.

Tonight at 7, the Pembroke High School Girls' Varsity Basketball Team will take to the court for a “Shooting for the Cure" benefit basketball game against Attica High School to raise money for breast cancer research.

The high school is located at 8750 Alleghany Road (Route 77) in Corfu.

Corfu-Pembroke Community Winterfest

John Lamond of WYRK will emcee the annual Corfu-Pembroke Community Winterfest. This year's focus is the Town of Pembroke's Bicentennial, hosted by Town historian Al Starkweather.

The event will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28 at the community center, 116 E. Main St. in Corfu.

Entertainment includes the musical talents of the Craig Wilkins Band and the local community band.

Free Spaghetti Dinner: Pasta for Peace

The third “Pasta for Peace” free spaghetti dinner, will be held on Thursday, Jan. 12, 2012 at 6:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 300 E. Main St., in Batavia. Former Sheriff Doug Call will be the featured speaker.

Call was recently honored by Genesee County Democratic Party leaders for his long commitment to public service.

Congresswoman Hochul will meet with constituents in Corfu on Jan. 10

Night hike at Genesee County Park and Forest

If you would enjoy taking a walk in a winter wonderland, there is one planned in the evening on Saturday, Feb. 11 at Genesee County Park.

Using snowshoes, participants will be guided through a night hike at Genesee County Park and Forest under the full moon and finish at Pavilion A for refreshments and a warm fire. Snowshoes will be provided.

Time is from 6 to 8 p.m. Preregistration is required. Call 344-1122 to make reservations. Cost is $8 per person. Dress for cold weather.

Tattoos for Charity at High Voltage

High Voltage Tattoo & Piercing, 110 W. Main St., Batavia, will tattoo or pierce anybody who shows up at the door from 10 a.m. until there's nobody left to tattoo or pierce, and donate all of the proceeds to Community Action of Orleans and Genesee.

Tattoos are $25 and piercings are $15, with 100 percent of the fees going to Community Action.

Artists Lisa Vokes, Kevin Lockwood and Mark Fanara will apply the tattoos.

Santa Claus visits Richmond Library tonight at 6:30

Santa Claus will make a special guest appearance at the Richmond Memorial Library in Batavia tonight (Dec. 7) at 6:30. No registration is required.

There will be stories, picture taking and merrymaking! Don’t forget to bring your camera so that you can capture this magical event. Children of all ages are welcomed.

Annual Fall Nursing Job Fair at GCC

From noon until 2 p.m. this Thursday, Nov. 3, there will be the annual Fall Nursing Job Fair at Genesee Community College. It will be held in the Forum, 1 College Road, Batavia.

More than 30 of the area's top health-care employers and four-year universities will attend to help people explore educational and career opportunities. This event is designed to introduce potential new employees to employers, and also provides health-care businesses an opportunity to present their trade and services to the local community.

Toastmasters invite you to hear inspirational speech by cancer survivor

The public is invited to hear the powerful and inspirational account of a Genesee Community College graduate's battle with a rare form of cancer.

"Life is Tough But I Am Tougher" is alumna Suzanne Smith's (Class of '09) story of the challenges she met and overcame following her diagnosis, which occurred shortly after she graduated from GCC as a nontraditional student.
