Arc Art Show & Sprout Film Festival at GCC

The Arc of Genesee Orleans will again be presenting an Art Show & Film Festival in celebration of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month.

It will be held Saturday, March 17 at the GCC Stuart Steiner Theatre located on 1 College Drive, Batavia.

There will be a collection of art work created by individuals served at the Arc of Genesee Orleans on display in the foyer at Stuart Steiner Theatre. You will have an opportunity to meet and talk with the artists from 12:30 to 1 p.m. and the Sprout film screening will begin at 1 o'clock.

CANCELLED: Culinary Arts Club hosts pop-up bakeshop

Say "I love you" with a special homemade treat! The Batavia Career and Technical Education Center's Culinary Arts Club will host a pop-up bakeshop from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10.

Handmade scones, cherry pies, cookies, cakes and baked goods of all assortments will be for sale! 

This pop-up shop will be held in the Culinary Arts Dining Room at the Batavia Career and Technical Education Center. The center is located at 8250 State Street Road, Batavia. Use side door 71 and find room a-124-B.

Reel Discussion at Richmond library: 'He Named Me Malala'

Come view the movie and join us for a group discussion afterward. This month’s movie is “He Named Me Malala." It will be shown at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 22.

It's a look at the events leading up to the Taliban's attack on Pakistani schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai for speaking out on girls' education followed by the aftermath, including her speech to the United Nations.

'Gnomes to Knit' class for adults at Richmond library, registration required

Richmond Memorial Library, 19 Ross St., Batavia, is presenting a “Gnomes to Knit!” class on Tuesday, Feb. 20 at 6:30 p.m.

This class is taught by Linda Daviau and is for adults who know how to knit on double-pointed needles. Please bring a set of U.S. #3 double-pointed needles. All other supplies are provided.

Registration is required, and $4 for supplies is due at registration. Samples of the gnomes are on display at the library.

Pair of Eastman School of Music grad students perform free Classical Guitar concert at Richmond library

Writers' Group meets at Richmond library, Batavia

Richmond Memorial Library, 19 Ross St., Batavia, has a Writers’ Group meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 14 at 6:30 p.m. for adults interested in meeting other writers, practicing their writing, gaining new ideas, and sharing their writing with others.

Mini Photo Album Class for adults at Richmond library, registration required

Richmond Memorial Library, 19 Ross St., Batavia is hosting a Mini Album Class for adults on Monday, Feb. 26, at 6:30 p.m.

Learn how to make a mini album from one sheet of decorative paper in this class taught by Jenn Cascell. The album will hold 12 or more photos.

Registration is required, and $7 for supplies is due at the time of registration. A list of other supplies to bring is at the library.

Family of Matthew Kota hosts Red Cross Blood Drive at Notre Dame

Giving back and saving lives 10 years later. Jason and Nancy Kota lost their son, Matthew, 10 years ago but they continue to honor his memory by giving back to the community and by helping save lives with the American Red Cross.

The Kota Family will be hosting the 10th Annual Matthew Kota Memorial Blood Drive on Saturday, Feb. 3, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Notre Dame High School in Batavia. It is located at 73 Union St.

GC Comprehensive Housing Needs Assessment and Market Analysis results revealed at Old Courthouse, Batavia

The results are in for the 2017 Genesee County Comprehensive Housing Needs and Market Analysis. LaBella Associates will be sharing these results with the public at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 7, at the Old Courthouse, Third Floor, 7 Main St., Batavia.

No reservations necessary.

Attendance may qualify for 1 hour of training credit for planning and zoning board members.

'Just Desserts' at St. James church in Batavia to benefit health and education in rural Africa

Please plan to join us for an evening of famous St. James desserts! The church’s Outreach Committee is hosting the first “Just Desserts” event: an evening of sweets and treats to raise funds in support of Community Health and Education for Rural Africa foundation (CHERA).

This project will encourage self-sufficiency through the development of a community maize milling cooperative.

Village of Alexander hosts public meeting about possible water system replacement

The Village of Alexander will be hosting a public meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb 1, at the Alexander Rec Hall. The purpose of this meeting is to inform the public about plans for the possible replacement of the entire village water system.

Anyone receiving water from the Village of Alexander is encouraged to attend.

CANCELLED: Asteria String Quartet performs 'First Viennese Valentine's' in special recital at Dibble Family Center

Asteria String Quartet presents "First Viennese Valentine's" with music from the First Viennese School -- Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven -- on Saturday Feb. 3 at the Dibble Family Center in Batavia.

The chamber recital starts at 7 p.m.

Beforehand, starting at 6 p.m., the quartet will serenade you as you enjoy special hors d'oeuvres, cash bar and also non-alcoholic beverages.

Musicians for the evening are: Kiran Rajamani -- violin; Leighann Howland -- violin; Evie Boughton -- viola; and Shade Zajac -- cello.

Free Community Health and Wellness Fair at Alexander HS Cafeteria

On Jan. 25 from 6-8 p.m. the Alexander United Teachers Union will be hosting a Community Health and Wellness Fair, open to the public, at the Alexander Central School’s High School Cafeteria.

This is the third biannual Health and Wellness Fair hosted by the Teacher’s Union.

Alexander Fire Department's All-You-Can-Eat Pancake Breakfast at Rec Hall, with kids' indoor bounce house

The Alexander Volunteer Fire Department will host an All-You-Can-Eat Pancake Breakfast in its Rec Hall from 8 a.m. to noon on Sunday, Jan. 28.

The Rec Hall is located at 10708 Alexander Road (Route 98), Attica.

Cost is: adults -- $10; children 5-12 --  $5; under age 4 -- free.

Also, there will be an indoor bounce house.

(FYI: On March 25 there will be another breakfast, same details, and the Easter Bunny will visit!)
