Attention voters! The Genesee County Board of Elections is demonstrating the new voting machines which will be used in the 2010 elections. The next demonstration is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 11, at Darien Town Hall, located at 10569 Alleghany Road in Darien Center.

Festival of Fur is Saturday noon to 4 at Genesee Feeds

The Festival of Fur is noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 31 at Genesee Feeds and Needs, located at 3860 W. Main St. Road in the Town of Batavia. (Across the street from the animal shelter.)

It is a good time for pet people, former residents, new residents, supporters of the Genesee County Animal Shelter and families to get together and talk pets, have some BBQ chicken and all the fixins (sold until sold out), get Fido microchipped, etc.

Free car seat safety check at Wolcott Street School

State Senator Michael H. Ranzenhofer has announced a free Car Seat Safety Check from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 7 at Wolcott Street School, 2-6 Trigon Park in Le Roy.
 
“Every parent knows that installing a car seat can be difficult," Ranzenhofer said. "This event will give parents information on how to properly install car seats as well as ensure the car seat they have is safely secured."

The program is free and open to the public. No appointment or RSVP is necessary. Water and soda pop will be served.

Meet with Assemblyman Hawley

Assemblyman Steve Hawley will host his regular monthly outreach meeting on Thursday, July 29 for Genesee County residents and everyone is invited.

The meeting is from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Legislative Conference Room of the Old Courthouse, located at 7 Main St. in Downtown Batavia.

“This will be an excellent opportunity for Western New Yorkers to express their concerns and ask questions about state government issues. I would encourage all local residents to attend,” Hawley says.

Concerts in Hickory Park, Bergen

Come on down to Hickory Park, at Route 19 in Bergen, for Big Band music and refreshments! The fun starts at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 4 and lasts about an hour and a half.

This event is sponsored by the Bergen Fire Ladies Auxiliary and the Byron-Bergen Public Library, and will feature "78RPM."

Watercolors by Vic Corey Jr. on display and for sale at Richmond Library

Local artist Vic Corey Jr. will have 15 watercolor illustrations on display in the Gallery Room of the Richmond Memorial Library, at 19 Ross St. in Batavia, starting Monday, Aug. 2 and continuing throughout the month.

The majority of Corey's art will be for sale. A brochure will be available, describing and listing the price of each work of art.

'Relay for Life' at Van Detta Stadium

The American Cancer Society's "Relay for Life" comes to Batavia on Friday, Aug. 13! This is an overnight event and will take place from 6 p.m. until 6 a.m. the following morning.

It's at the Van Detta Stadium track, at 120 Richmond Ave. in Batavia, and is open to walkers and runners of all ages.

Retired surgeon to discuss health care reform at First United Methodist Church

Batavia's First United Methodist Church invites everyone to attend "Health Care Reform Laws -- An Update," a community presentation that will take place on from 7 until 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 6.

The church is located at 8221 Lewiston Road.

The discussion will be led by Victor Desa, M.D., a retired general surgeon who worked in Batavia for many years and is currently on the Board of Directors for United Memorial Medical Center.

Hotdog stand at WalMart Sunday to benefit animals

This Sunday, July 25, there will be a hotdog stand outside the Batavia Walmart to help support Volunteers for Animals.

It opens at 11 a.m. and will be generously provided by Jackson St. Grill/Belladessa's. There will be grilled hotdogs, chips and soda pop for sale, with all proceeds going to VFA. They plan to be there until 6 p.m. or until the hotdogs are sold out!

"We hope you will come out for a dog and drink to help out the animals at the Genesee County Animal Shelter," say the volunteers.

Attention voters! There will be a demonstration of the new electronic voting machines, which will be used in the 2010 elections, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 29 in Pembroke Town Hall.

It is located at 1145 Main Road in Corfu.

(Note: this date was changed from the previously scheduled date of Wednesday, July 28 in Pembroke. The Genesee County Board of Elections apologizes for any inconvenience.)

Weiner Dog Races set for Aug. 29 at Batavia Downs Casino

Batavia Downs Casino will hold its annual Weiner Dog Races and Family Fun Day on Sunday, Aug. 29.

The whole family is invited to visit with Mr. Scribbles, Pringles the Clown, and get free pony rides 2 to 4 p.m. for the kids. Sahlens hot dogs and sodas will be just $1 at the Paddock Room concession stand beginning at noon.

At approximately 4:30 p.m., the Weiner Dogs will take to the track! Petco of Batavia is the official sponsor of the event and will supply doggy bags to the owners of the participating dogs.

Reptiles visit Richmond Library on Friday afternoon

Like reptiles? Come get a look at a variety of them on Friday at the Richmond Memorial Library, at 19 Ross St. in Batavia!

This opportunity to see these creatures is being offered as part of the "Nickel City Reptiles" -- part of the library's 2010 Summer Reading Program.

Admission is free and does not require pre-registration. The fun starts at 2:30 p.m.
