Alexander Fire Department's annual carnival and tractor pull is July 9 and 10

The Alexander Fire Department is happy to announce that the RIDES ARE BACK for the this year's annual carnival/tractor pull on July 9 and 10!

The midway will be open from 6 to 11 p.m. on Friday, July 9 and Noon to 11 p.m. on Saturday.

The fire department has also brought back the Kiddie and Grand parades. Both parades will take place on Saturday. The Kiddie Parade will begin at Noon and the Grand Parade at 3:30 p.m.

A Day in the Park in Oakfield

Oakfield will hold a community celebration on Monday Sept. 6. The Labor Day event is called "A Day in the Park" and will be an alcohol-free family extravaganza!

It takes place at Elroy D. Perkins Park on Drake Street. There will be a parade down Main Street at 10 a.m. and games and entertainment for everyone.

Music will be provided by Duck 'N Cover and The Trolls. There will be a car show and many local crafters selling all kinds of stuff.

Author Jeff Schettler visits Present Tense

Jeff Schettler, author of "Red Dog Rising," will be at Present Tense, at 101 Washington Ave. in Batavia, from 5 until 6 p.m. on Friday, July 9.

Schettler's presentation will include a slide show of K9 training as well as a trained K9 on site.

First Presbyterian of Batavia welcomes Knox Youth Choir

The Knox Youth Choir of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Dayton, Ohio -- famous for its musical heritage -- will put on a concert at 7 p.m., Wednesday, July 7 in the sanctuary of the First Presbyterian Church, at 300 E. Main St. in Batavia.

These young singers are touring the Northeast to share their musical talent, entertain and inspire. Their concert in Batavia is free and open to the public.

Town of Batavia Fire Department hosts 'Harley Raffle'

On Saturday, July 24, the Town of Batavia's Volunteer Fire Department will hold its 11th annual Harley Davidson raffle drawing at the Rec Hall, at 8382 Lewiston Road in the Town of Batavia. It will last from 7 until 11:59 p.m. Participants need not be present to win.

Genesee County Fair

The annual Genesee County Fair will be held from Tuesday, July 20 until Saturday, July 24 at the Genesee County Fairgrounds, at 5056 E. Main St. Road in Batavia. Admission is free, but there will be a $5 charge for parking.

The fair will last from 8 a.m. until 11 p.m. each day, with rides starting at 4 p.m. Kids and families can ride as much as they want for $10.

Grandstand events, a car show, a parade, food, animals, a queen contest and entertainment will also be included.

Winemaker visits GoArt!

Jonathan Oakes, viticulturalist at the Leonard Oakes Estate Winery, will visit GoArt!'s Seymour Place, at 201 E. Main St. in Batavia, on Tuesday, July 13, to talk about the art and science of winemaking. The event will last from 6 until 8 p.m. and costs $18 per GoArt! member and $20 per non-member.

Wine lovers will get to taste samples from the Oakes estate and enjoy a themed dinner to go along with the event.

Civil War encampment at Holland Land Office Museum

The Fourth South Carolina Infantry will put on a Civil War Encampment at the Holland Land Office Museum, at 131 W. Main St. in Batavia, from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 10.

Lynyrd Skynyrd at Darien Lake!

First Presbyterian Deacons host golf tournament

Deacons of First Presbyterian Church Batavia are hosting a golf tournament on Aug. 7, at Batavia Country Club, 7909 Batavia Byron Road.

Registration for the scramble format begins at Noon. Putting Contest at 1 p.m. Tee time is 2 p.m.

Per person cost is $65 and includes greens fee, cart, lunch, and steak dinner.

Shot gun starts at 2 p.m. Individuals will be matched with incomplete teams. Hot dogs and drink will be served at the turn. There will be door prizes and a silent auction. Award will be handed out at dinner.

MooseCreek 2010 is July 16-18

The LeRoy Moose Family Center is having its annual wingding to benefit Mercy flight July 16-18 during Le Roy's Oatka Festival.

The center is located at 21 Bank St. in the village, along the banks of the mighty Oatka Creek.

MooseCreek 2010 opens Friday at 6 p.m. with a kickoff party. Music starts at 9 p.m. featuring Rochester’s premier modern rock band -- "The Guy Smiley Band"!

On Saturday night, music starts at 7 with "Scorpions" tribute band "Fatal Sting," followed by MooseCreek legends and one of the leading "AC/DC" tribute bands in the industry, "Ballbreaker."

Taste of Stafford is July 8, all its veterans to be honored

The Sixth Annual Taste of Stafford, sponsored by the Stafford Historical Society, will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 8 in Illette Park. The park is located at the intersection of route 5 and 237.

Honored will be Stafford veterans of all wars and conflicts, to include individuals from the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, the Great War, World War ll, Korea, Viet Nam, the Gulf War and those who have served or are serving our country in the most recent conflicts around the world.

Tributes will be also shown to men and women who served or are serving in peace-time.

Carriage-driving show Sunday

There will be a carriage-driving show from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday June 20, at Silver Shoe Farm.

It is located at 3336 Pratt Road in Batavia. This is very different from riding and racing. Horses are pulling carriages, some of them antiques. Last year, there were 40 horses all different shapes and sizes and over 150 people spectating.

Everyone is welcome to attend.

Stafford Fireman's Carnival starts tonight

The Stafford Volunteer Fire Department's annual four-day carnival starts at 6 p.m. tonight and ends at 9 p.m. on Sunday.

The carnival takes place at the fire station, at 6153 Main Road in Stafford, and will include rides, games, refreshments, parades, live music, a drawing for a 1965 Nassau Blue Corvette Convertible, a cam stand, a flea market, a fireman's chicken BBQ, a Kiddie Tractor Pull and Saturday evening fireworks and more.

Downtown Batavia Public Market opens June 17

On Thursday, June 17,  the fourth annual Downtown Batavia Public Market opens at the corner of Ellicott (Route 63) and Center streets. Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

This year there are some new vendors, including two wineries which will sell wine and offer tastings. There's also a vendor selling homemade Italian cookies and treats. Plus, the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Genesee County will offer free nutritional programs and information. The City of Batavia Police Department will provide free child car seat inspections. And other special events are planned.
