House fire on Maple Street in the city

A house fire is reported at 26 Maple St. in the City of Batavia. Evans Street is shut down at Watson Street. City firefighters are on scene.

UPDATE 1:36 p.m.: Two Mercy rigs are requested to the scene.

UPDATE 1:37 p.m.: Maple Street is shut down at Thorpe.

UPDATE 1:39 p.m.: A Fast Team from the Town of Batavia is called in as well as a town crew to fill in at the city's fire hall. A female with burned hands is waiting for treatment at the corner of Evans and Maple. The second floor of the structure is fully involved.

UPDATE 1:43 p.m.: Mutual aid from the Town of Elba is on scene. There's a vehicle at the scene that needs to be moved (the owner of vehicle's wife works at the warehouse/transfer facility on Ganson Avenue, but they don't have the owner's name. He was seen walking down Maple).

UPDATE 1:52 p.m.: The inside fire is knocked down. They are starting rehab of the fire scene. A rep. for National Grid is called and will be there shortly. Now they are calling for a fill-in at the city station from Oakfield. The city's third platoon is called to the scene. The house is the light brown (or dark tan) two-story at the corner of Evans and Maple, across the street from the church.

UPDATE 2:01: An adult female with first- and second-degree burns to her hands is being transported to UMMC. The National Grid rep. is on scene.

UPDATE 2:09 p.m.: There's fire in the ceiling above a first-floor bedroom and they are going to break into the ceiling to put it out. Oakfield is in the city's fire hall.

UPDATE 2:23 p.m.: Fire under control.

UPDATE 2:37 p.m.: A National Fuel rep. is called to the scene.

UPDATE 2:52 p.m.: The American Red Cross is called to come to the aid of a mother and her three children. There are other occupants who live in the home, but they have not yet determined other information about them.

UPDATE 2:59 p.m.: The other family who lives in the house is "all set" and will apparently not require Red Cross assistance.

UPDATE 3:21 p.m.: The building owner is on scene.

UPDATE 3:34 p.m.: Elba firefighters are back in service.

UPDATE 3:45 p.m.: Red Cross is on location. City fire crews are rolling up their hoses and preparing to leave the scene.

UPDATE 4:02 p.m.: Mutual aid responders from the Town of Batavia Fire Department are back in service.

UPDATE 4:42 p.m.: The structure will be demolished this evening.

Possible fire in the area of Old Creek Road and Cookson Road, Alexander

An unknown type of fire has been reported in the area of Old Creek Road and Cookson Road in the Town of Alexander.

Alexander Fire Department is responding.

UPDATE 8:32 p.m.: It appears to be a controlled burn.

UPDATE 8:37 p.m.: The fire is at 9519 Old Creek Road. Alexander will extinguish the fire.

Field fire reported off Route 20, Alexander

A field fire is reported in the area of 2757 Route 20, Alexander.

Alexander Fire Department dispatched.

A passerby reports that it looks like a controlled burn that has now spread.

UPDATE 10:12 a.m.: A brush truck from Darien was requested, but a chief on scene now requests that Darien stand by in quarters.

UPDATE 10:16 a.m.: Darien back in service. One Alexander unit canceled.

Grass fire on Woodland Drive, Batavia

A "very small" grass fire is reported at 13 Woodland Drive in the Town of Batavia, which has its fire department on scene.

UPDATE 4:26 p.m.: The fire is out.

Tractor fire on Dorman Road, Batavia

A tractor fire is reported at 9322 Dorman Road in the Town of Batavia, which has its fire department responding. It is not near any structures.

UPDATE 4:50 p.m.: The fire is out. All units returning to service.

UPDATE: Joe Valone, owner of Pheasants on the Flats, was mowing his property this afternoon when he looked down and saw flames popping out from his engine compartment. He tried to extinguish the fire himself, but couldn't. By the time firefighters arrived, the entire compartment was engulfed in flames. The tractor is a 1957 Ford that Valone had restored about two years ago.

Vehicle fire on the eastbound Thruway

A vehicle fire is reported on the eastbound Thruway between mile marker 375 and 378. Town of Batavia Fire Department and Le Roy medics are responding.

UPDATE 7:26 p.m.: It's a white Ford Escort. UPDATE 7:35 p.m.: Le Roy medics are back in service. There were flames coming from the vehicle, now there's just some smoke, and they're watering it down to cool it off.

Shed fire on Martin Road, Alabama

A fully involved shed fire with exposure to a residence is reported at 245 Martin Road, near the intersection with Bloomingdale Road in Alabama. Alabama Fire Department is responding. Akron is responding because it had somebody already at the scene. Indian Falls is standing by in their hall. The shed is about 10 by 15 square feet.

UPDATE 7:42 a.m.: The fire has been knocked down. Firefighters are checking for any extensions.

Structure fire on Ellicott Street Road, Pavilion

Heavy black smoke is spewing from a vacant structure at 6553 Ellicott St. Road in Pavilion. They are not sure whether it's coming from the first or second story. Pavilion Fire Department is responding and so is Le Roy's.

UPDATE 12:34 p.m.: A responder on scene reports this is a "controlled burn" -- a rubbish fire, which includes tires, and it's behind the house. The second-alarm responders are told to stand by in quarters-- they include Alexander, Bethany, Stafford and the City of Batavia's Fast Team.

UPDATE 12:37 p.m.: They anticipate being able to "knock this out quickly."

UPDATE 12:43 p.m.: Bethany's tanker is en route, non-emergency mode. Stafford is cancelled. (We presume the city and Alexander are also standing down.) They are going to shut the road to traffic.

UPDATE 12:45 p.m.: "We've got it pretty well knocked down for the most part."

UPDATE 12:54 p.m.: The fire is out.

UPDATE 12:57 p.m.: Le Roy is returning to service.

UPDATE 1:12 p.m.: The road is reopened.

UPDATE 1:16 p.m.: Bethany and Pavilion are back in service. A representative of the Department of Environmental Conservation responded to the scene to investigate and is now leaving.

Brush fire off Gibson Street, Bergen

A brush fire is reported behind 37 Gibson St. in Bergen. Bergen Fire Department is responding.

UPDATE 4:18 p.m.: The fire is out. Bergen is back in service.

Mulch fire behind store on Veterans Memorial Drive, Batavia

A mulch fire is reported behind the Radio Shack store at 4234 Veterans Memorial Drive. Town of Batavia Fire Department is responding.

UPDATE 3:38 p.m.: The fire is out. Town of Batavia is back in service.

Grass fire on Colby Road in Corfu

A grass fire is reported at 9286 Colby Road. It is near a structure and there's an abandoned car nearby as well. This is the Reed's residence. Corfu Fire Department is responding and a person on scene says there's some smoke showing but the problem "doesn't look too big."

UPDATE 3:09 p.m.: Apparently, they've extinguished the fire because they told a firefighter calling to check on their status that they were "packing up the hose now."

UPDATE 3:16 p.m.: Corfu is back in service.

Small grass fire reported off Cedar Street, Batavia

City Fire Department is being dispatched to the CSX tracks just west of Cedar Street for the report of a small grass fire.

The location is mile post 402.

UPDATE 2:05 p.m.: City fire requests confirmation of notification of CSX because of limited visibility for westbound trains. There is currently a westbound train in the area.

UPDATE 2:12 p.m.: CSX is slowing trains to 30 mph in both directions. If city fire wishes them slowed more or stopped, dispatch can put in the request.

UPDATE 2:30 p.m.: Fire is contained.

Vehicle on fire in field off Route 77, Alabama

A vehicle fire is reported on Route 77 near Bloomingdale and Judge roads. It's in a field on the east side of the roadway. Alabama Fire Department is responding.

UPDATE 5:53 p.m.: A possible field fire is reported as a result of the vehicle fire.

UPDATE 5:54 p.m.: The fire chief on scene says the vehicle fire is fully involved and the field is also on fire.

UPDATE 5:58 p.m.: Fire police are requested to the scene for traffic control.

UPDATE 6:07 p.m.: The fire is under control, but some small blazes have cropped up nearby. More manpower is requested and law enforcement is also responding.

UPDATE 6:12 p.m.: All fire is out.

UPDATE 6:29 p.m.: Alabama is back in service.

Grease fire reported in kitchen on Highland Avenue

A grease fire is reported in the kitchen at 16 Highland Ave. in the City of Batavia. The residence has been evacuated. But the city fire department is on scene and reports nothing is showing.

UPDATE 2:32 p.m.: The fire was contained to a pot on the stove and it's now out. The home is being ventilated.

UPDATE 3 p.m.: All units clear of 16 Highland. City Fire back in service.

Garage fire reported in Pavilion

A confirmed garage fire is reported at 7658 Telephone Road (Route 20) in Pavilion.

Pavilion Fire along with Le Roy Fire responding. Stafford is on standby.

UPDATE 2:11 p.m.: Chief on scene reports garbage fire next to the garage, but not into the garage yet.

UPDATE 2:14 p.m.: Responding departments include (but not limited to): Perry, York, Wyoming, Alexander and Bethany.  Also Engine 12 of City Fire is responding to something, possibly this, which would constitute the Fast Team, with Fourth Platoon requested to fill in at City Station.

UPDATE 2:20 p.m.: The fire has been knocked down.

UPDATE 2:40 p.m.: Engine 12 back in the city. Le Roy, along with several other responding companies, back in service.

UPDATE 2:58 p.m.: Pavilion back in service.

Shed fire on Lewiston Road, Alabama

A shed fire is reported at 2082 Lewiston Road near Knowlesville Road. Alabama Fire Department is responding. Oakfield Fire Department is called to stand by in its hall.

UPDATE 12:19 p.m.: According to the National Weather Service, there's an elevated fire risk today "due to a combination of dry air, lingering vegetation from last year" and moderate northwest winds. (Also, tonight there's a freeze likely, with temperatures expected to be 25 to 30 degrees.)

UPDATE 12:23 p.m.: Alabama Engine 2 is on scene "with a working shed fire."

UPDATE 12:24 p.m.: Alabama engines 1 and 5 are on scene.

UPDATE 12:26 p.m.: Oakfield is told to stand down.

UPDATE 12:29 p.m.: The fire is extinguished and they are now doing overhaul.

UPDATE 12:56 p.m.: Alabama is back in service.

Possible grass fire off Lehigh Avenue, Batavia

A possible grass fire is reported at 480 Lehigh Ave. in Batavia, "behind the water plant." City firefighters are responding.

UPDATE 2:52 p.m.: City fire is back in service.

Report of 'thick, black smoke' near Alexander and Dodgeson roads, Alexander

Alexander Fire Department is responding to investigate a report of thick, black smoke in the area of Alexander and Dodgeson roads.

UPDATE 11:42 a.m.: The location is "the old Post Farm." The fireman on scene says "He's burning tires."

UPDATE 11:56 a.m.: The fire is out.

UPDATE 12:05 p.m.: Engine #7 is back in service. The location was determined to be 9568 Route 98.

UPDATE 12:17 p.m.: A representative of the New York Department of Environmental Conservation is now on scene to investigate the incident.

Weather service warns of dry conditions, fire danger in the region

Very dry conditions across Western New York are expected to last through early this evening and the National Weather Service is asking area residents to adhere to all local burn bans.

There is low relative humidity this afternoon of between 15 and 25 percent.

Winds, however, remain generally light and "well below red flag warning criteria."
