Three local students make the Deans' List at St. Bonaventure University

The following area students have been named to the fall 2011 Deans' List at St. Bonaventure University:

  • Anthony Zambito, a fourth-year student from Elba. He is majoring in Political Science.
  • Chelsie Hixenbaugh, a first-year student from Le Roy. She is majoring in Elementary Education/Special Education.
  • Kristin O'Gee, a fourth-year student from Le Roy. She is majoring in Elementary Education/Special Education.

GCC announces student of the month for November

Genesee Community College announced Wednesday that Emily Patrick has been named November Student of the Month.

Patrick is a work study student in the Student Activities office. The nominations received on her behalf were glowing regarding her excellent customer service skills, her willingness to take on a challenge and to go above and beyond what is asked of her. She was noted as a "breath of fresh air" in the classroom, always positive and motivated, and she has acted in a mentor-like manner to the first-semester students in class.

She shows commitment, energy and intelligence, and is able to translate these personal traits into proactive ideas and solutions.

Patrick is involved in numerous activities on campus and is currently one of two student bloggers for the college. Her blog entries can be found at www.GCCCampusBlog.wordpress.com. She has also been featured as a "Face of Genesee" in the television ads for GCC.

"I chose GCC because the Batavia campus is only 20 minutes from my house and provided a good stepping stone for both my parents and I between high school and a four-year college," Patrick said. "I'm lucky I get to work in the Student Activities office and get to meet so many interesting people through the position."

She is 20 years old and is a 2010 graduate of Alexander Central School. She is currently a General Studies major and upon graduating, she hopes to attend the University of Buffalo to major in legal studies. An ambitious student, Emily dreams of one day being the president of the United States.

Emily, a resident of Batavia, is the daughter of Laurie and Christopher Patrick and the sister of David Patrick.

GCC announces employee of the month for November

Genesee Community College on Wednesday announced that Julie Caswell has been named November Employee of the Month. Caswell joined the staff in the fall of 2008 and has become a great asset to the college.

She has taken on added responsibilities and is always looking for ways to improve the safety of the college community. Particularly, her involvement in implementing the Integrated Campus Security Initiative (ICSI) grant is notable. She has been working closely with the vendor to ultimately complete the installation of the access-control system and surveillance cameras for the Batavia campus and the campus centers.

Caswell routinely conducts numerous safety-related training programs for Buildings and Grounds, Public Safety, and the entire college community. She is knowledgeable, helpful and regularly steps up where and when needed without being asked. Her professionalism and positive attitude serve as a role model for others.

She began working at GCC as an environmental, health and safety technical specialist. Last July, she became the acting director of Safety and Environmental Health. She currently oversees all environmental, health and safety and security-related programs; ensures compliance with all local, state and federal environmental, health and safety regulations; conducts environmental, health and safety, and security-related trainings; and coordinates emergency preparedness and response planning.

Caswell holds a certificate of Environmental Management Science from Rochester Institute of Technology, an associates degree in General Studies from GCC, a bachelor's degree from SUNY Brockport and will soon complete a master's of Public Administration from SUNY Brockport. Prior to working at GCC she worked as an environmental, health and safety consultant in private industry.

"My favorite aspect of working at Genesee Community College is the variety of projects that I get to work on and the team environment," said Caswell, who lives in West Chili with her husband, Kris.

Corfu student awarded scholarship at Alfred State College

Bobbie Jo Norton, of Corfu, has been awarded a $1,000 per year "Educational Foundation Academic Distinction" scholarship to attend Alfred State College.

She is slated to graduate in 2012 from Pembroke Central School and intends to enroll in the accounting program.

The award, based on scholastic achievement, is from the Educational Foundation of Alfred, Inc., according to Deborah Goodrich, associate vice president for enrollment management at Alfred State.

Fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, Alfred State offers some 52 associate degree programs, 19 baccalaureate degree programs, and three certificate programs.

Four local students make the Deans' List at Paul Smith's College

Four local students were named to the Deans' List at Paul Smith's College during the fall 2011 semester. Each earned a semester average of 3.3 or higher to receive this distinction. They are:

Craig Holland, of Bergen

Alison Liedkie, of Le Roy. She was also named an Adirondack Scholar, having achieved a cumulative average of at least 3.8.

Mercedes Mosher, of Le Roy

Benjamin Nicodemus, of Le Roy. He was also named an Adirondack Scholar, having achieved a cumulative average of at least 3.8.

Paul Smith's College is on the shores of Lower St. Regis Lake. It's the only four-year institution of higher education in the 6-million-acre Adirondack Park of New York State.

Le Roy High School senior receives $15,700 annual scholarship

Hannah Presher, of LeRoy, has been awarded approximately $15,700 per year for the "Excellence in Education Scholarship" to attend Alfred State College.

She is slated to graduate in 2012 from Le Roy Jr. / Sr. High School and intends to enroll in the nursing program.

The "Excellence in Education Scholarship" (free tuition, room [double occupancy] and board) is awarded to students who possess a 93 or better high school grade-point average through their junior year and who have achieved at least a 1,200 combined SAT score or a composite ACT score of 26; students must apply for financial aid. Recipients must maintain a required GPA to continue to receive funding in subsequent semesters.

Alfred State College announces Deans' List for the fall 2011 semester

Stephen J. Havlovic, vice president for academic affairs at Alfred State College, has announced the Deans' List of students for the fall 2011 semester.

Students from both the Alfred campus and the School of Applied Technology campus in Wellsville are selected for the Deans' List if they maintain a 3.50 grade-point average (GPA) out of a possible 4.0. The 4.0 GPA or straight "A" students are indicated with an asterisk (*).

The following Genesee County students were among those recognized:

SUNY Geneseo names eight local students to Deans' List

The State University of New York at Geneseo has announced its Deans' List for the fall semester 2011. To be on the list, a student must have achieved a 3.5 grade-point average while taking at least 12 credit hours.

Five local Nazareth College students make the Deans' List

Nazareth College is proud to announce the following students have earned Deans' List honors for the Fall 2011 semester:

A student's grade-point average must be at least 3.5 or above, and they must complete 12 credit hours of graded work that semester in order to be included on the list.

Batavia student earns scholarship to assist with criminal justice education

Annually, the New York State Sheriffs’ Association Institute awards a $250 scholarship to deserving students enrolled in criminal justice, police science or a similar program in each of the state’s community colleges and at SUNY Canton.

This year, three students enrolled in Criminal Justice at Genesee Community College received such a scholarship. They were nominated by GCC's Criminal Justice faculty. One of them attends college at the Batavia campus.

She is Edna M. Higgins, of Hutchins Street, Batavia.

In addition to a $250.00 check to further her education in Criminal Justice, she received a scholarship certificate from the New York State Sheriffs’ Association Institute. These were presented to her by Genesee County Sheriff Gary T. Maha.

GCC's marketing department earns awards

Genesee Community College's Marketing Communications department was the recipient of two National Council for Marketing and Public Relations (NCMPR) District 1 Medallion awards.

GCC won a Gold Medallion of Excellence in the Social Marketing category, and a Silver Medallion of Excellence in the Postcard category. All aspects of the publications development, including copy writing, photography, video, and graphic design were completed in-house through the College's Marketing Communications office.

Winning in the Social Marketing category was "GCC Gets Social" social media campaign that included efforts in Facebook, Twitter, numerous Youtube videos, use of QR codes and other networking sites. The submission covered the background research, objectives, execution, results and evaluation of the campaign. This was the first time the college had entered a submission in the Social Marketing category.

Winning in the Postcard category was the Genesee Center for the Arts Calendar of Events. The postcards are distributed to more than 3,000 community members at the beginning of each season to promote a wide array of art events occurring at Genesee Center for the Arts.

The direct mail piece showcases performing art events as well as gallery exhibitions and receptions using an assortment of collage-like techniques. From creative font applications to pastel and watercolor brush strokes, dynamic backgrounds, and replications of real artwork – various elements of the art season are blended together masterfully on each postcard to promote the coming semester's art exhibits, performing artists or plays.

(The Center for the Arts Calendar of Events previously won a Gold Medallion of Excellence at the 2010 NCMPR District I Medallion awards.)

Le Roy students makes Deans' List at Cazenovia College

Cazenovia College recently released names of students honored for academic achievement during the fall semester of 2011. The college is home to about 1,000 degree-seeking students; those named to the Deans' List have achieved a 3.5 or better grade-point average for all courses attempted, and have earned 12 or more academic credits during the semester.

Among the honorees is Chelsie M. Hume, of Le Roy, a senior working toward a bachelor of science degree in psychology.

Elba student makes the Deans' List at Savannah College

Kelsey Diehl, of Elba, was named to the Deans' List at Savannah College of Art and Design for fall quarter 2011. Full-time undergraduate students who earn a grade-point average of 3.5 or above for the quarter receive this recognition.

The Savannah College of Art and Design is a private, nonprofit, accredited institution offering degrees in more than 40 areas of study, as well as minors in nearly 60 disciplines.

Corfu woman earns award from St. John Fisher College

Corfu resident Susan Schultz, Ph.D., has received an information literacy award from St. John Fisher College in Rochester.

She is associate professor in the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. School of Education and the 2011 recipient of the Second Annual Dr. Mark Szarejko Faculty Information Literacy Award.

She was nominated by Wendy Paterson, Ph.D., dean of the School of Education, who described Schultz as a visible and enthusiastic champion of information literacy on campus and in the teaching profession.

"Dr. Schultz has embraced information literacy as a way to develop teacher candidates to be efficient and effective educators contributing to student learning in their own practices," said Melissa Jadlos, director of Lavery Library. "She is committed to the purposeful integration of information literacy standards across the program curriculum."

This award is sponsored by Lavery Library and the winners are chosen by committee.

Stafford student selected as member of Gettysburg College Musical Group

Erin O'Connor, of Stafford, has been selected to participate in the Gettysburg College Musical Group. She is a member of the Wind Symphony.

For almost 100 years, Gettysburg College students have been performing in musical groups at Gettysburg. The college has a long tradition of excellence in performance and offer a variety of music ensembles - choral, band, orchestra and jazz for students to join.

With a student body of approximately 2,600, Gettysburg College is a highly selective four-year residential college of liberal arts and sciences located on a 200-acre campus adjacent to the Gettysburg National Military Park. The college was founded in 1832.

Daughter of West Batavia couple earns bachelor's degree in Nutrition

Maria J. Brockenshire, daughter of Norman and Mary Brockenshire of West Batavia, has graduated from online Kaplan University with a bachelor's degree in Nutrition.

She also graduated from Provo College in 2009 with an associates degree in Medical Assisting. Brockenshire is a 2005 graduate of Genesee County's BOCES GED Program.

She currently resides in Tonawanda and is employed at People, Inc.

Elba student earns bachelor's degree in advertising from Savannah College of Art and Design

Kelsey Lauren Diehl, of Elba, recently graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design. Diehl earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Advertising.

Stafford student awarded All-American scholarship to Alfred State College

A Genesee County resident has been awarded approximately $4,350 per year for the "All-American Scholarship" to attend Alfred State College.

Sutton Carhart, of Stafford, is slated to graduate in 2012 from LeRoy Jr.-Sr. High School and intends to enroll in the construction management engineering technology program.

The "All-American Scholarship" (free board) is awarded to students who possess an 88 or better high school average through their junior year and who have achieved at least a 1,100 combined SAT score or a composite ACT score of 24. Recipients must maintain a required GPA (grade-point average) to continue to receive free board in subsequent semesters.

Bergen student at RIT makes the Deans' List

Nicholas Quilliam, of Bergen, has been named to the Deans' List for the fall quarter at Rochester Institute of Technology.

A third-year student in RIT's B. Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences, Quilliam is studying Information Technology. He is a 2002 graduate of Maple Grove Jr./Sr. High School.
