Staci Bogan and Joshua Finn

William and Nanci Bogan of Batavia announce the engagement of their daughter, Staci Jo, to Joshua Michael Finn of Batavia.  Josh is the son of Thomas Finn of Batavia, and the late Sandra Brownell Finn.  The engagement took place on December 4, 2010 at Stoakey Farms, after the couple picked out their "perfect" Christmas tree.

Staci is a 2001 graduate of Notre Dame High School and a 2006 graduate from SUNY Canton with an Associates degree in Veterinary Technology and a Bachelors degree in Veterinary Service Management.  She has worked as a licensed veterinary technician at the York Animal Hospital since 2004.

Josh is a 2000 graduate of Batavia High School.  He has been a Firefighter and EMT for the Town of Batavia Fire Department since 2001.  He works at the VA Medical Center in Batavia as a motor vehicle operator.

A September 24, 2011 wedding is being planned.

Five local students earn academic honors at SUNY Canton

SUNY Canton recently recognized students who excelled academically during the Spring 2011 semester.

To receive President's List honors, full-time students must earn a semester grade-point average (GPA) of 3.75 or higher on a 4.0 scale. For Deans' List, full-time students must receive a GPA of 3.25. Part-Time Honors are awarded to students earning at least a 3.25 GPA on six to 11 credit hours.

Among the students who earned honors for academics were:

  • Tarry M. Fluker, of Oakfield, a Legal Studies major, made Part-Time Honors. Fluker is a 1988 graduate of Le Roy Central School.
  • Stacy E. Holley, of Bergen, a Criminal Investigation major, made President's List. Holley is a 2008 graduate of Byron Bergen Junior-Senior High School. This student also graduated from SUNY Canton in May.
  • Nathan J. Herman, of Pavilion, an Alternative and Renewable Energy Systems major, made Deans' List. Herman is a 2009 graduate of Pavilion Central School.
  • Quinton J. Jensen, of Pavilion, an Alternative and Renewable Energy Systems major, made Deans' List. Jensen is a 2009 graduate of Pavilion Central School.
  • Justin A. Richardson, of Pavilion, an Alternative and Renewable Energy Systems major, made President's List. Richardson is a 2009 graduate of Pavilion Central School.

Bergen student completes SUNY Oswego internship in NYC

Christopher M. Dougherty, of Clinton Street Road in Bergen, took part in an internship this summer through SUNY Oswego's Experience-Based Education Program.

Dougherty, a senior graphic design major, interned at Live Auctioneers LLC, New York City.

The Experience-Based Education Program at Oswego places students in internships and career awareness opportunities that allow them to earn college credits while garnering valuable "real life" experience.

Last year, more than a thousand Oswego students took part in experiential learning while working at hundreds of businesses, nonprofit agencies and government offices, not counting the hundreds of student teachers working in area schools.

Admission to SUNY Oswego is competitive. U.S. News named it among the "Top Public Regional Universities in the North" for 2011, and the Princeton Review includes Oswego in its college guidebook "The Best Northeastern Colleges."

A 150-year-old comprehensive college in the State University of New York system, Oswego enrolls more than 8,000 students in its College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; School of Business; School of Communication, Media and the Arts; and School of Education.

Newest city police officer graduates from academy

The newest member of the Batavia Police Department has graduated from the Niagara County Law Enforcement Academy at Niagara University.

Officer Matthew D. Lutey has been attending the academy for the the past 24 weeks. At graduation ceremonies Monday, Lutey was presented the Joseph E. Steblein Memorial Award, named after the academy's first director.

The award is presented to the individual who demonstrates overall excellence in all areas of training.

Officer Lutey is a graduate of Genesee Community College and served six years in the Air Force. He is currently assigned to Field Training Officers where he will complete 16 additional weeks of on-the-job training with time spent assigned to all shifts.

Oakfield student named to Deans' List at RIT

John C. Koenig Jr., of Oakfield, was named to the Deans' List for the Spring 2011 quarter at the Rochester Institute of Technology.

To be named to the Deans' List, students must have a GPA of 3.4 or higher.

He will be a third-year student in RIT’s College of Applied Science and Technology, where he is studying Packaging Science.

His Cooperative Education placement for the Winter 2011 quarter will be at Unilever in New Jersey, where he will be working in Sustainability and Design Engineering to reduce the environmental impact of packaging. Cooperative education (co-op) is the most extensive and intensive of RIT’s experiential education opportunities.

Co-op is full-time, paid work experience directly related to one’s course of study. Each year more than 3,600 students complete more than 5,300 work assignments with more than 1,900 companies and organizations. Last year those students generated more than $30 million in earnings through their employment with industry, business, government, and the not-for-profit sector throughout the U.S. and in 40 foreign countries.

Two young women earn academic honors at Wells College

Le Roy resident earns nursing degree

Jennifer J. DeMarco, of Leroy, has earned an Associate in Science in Nursing degree from Excelsior College.

Excelsior College (www.excelsior.edu) is an accredited, private, nonprofit institution that focuses on the needs of working adults. Its primary mission is to increase access to a college degree for adult learners by removing obstacles to their educational goals.

Excelsior's unique strength is its acknowledged leadership in the assessment of student knowledge. It does so by providing working adults multiple avenues to degree completion that include its own online courses and college-level proficiency examinations, and the acceptance of credit in transfer from other colleges and universities.

Corfu students named to SUNY Buffalo Deans' List

Jillian Hunt, of Corfu, has been named to the School of Education Spring 2011 Deans' List at Buffalo State College. Hunt is the daughter of Ron and Pamela Burdinaro.

To qualify, students must earn a minimum term GPA of 3.5 and complete a minimum of 12 credit hours.

Founded in 1871, Buffalo State is the largest comprehensive college in the SUNY system. It offers more than 165 undergraduate and 62 graduate programs in the arts, sciences, professions, and education. The College at Brockport, State University of New York, recently honored local students who excelled academically in the Spring 2011 semester.

To be on the President's List, a student must earn a GPA of 4.0. Students who earn a GPA of 3.70–3.99 are named to the Deans' List with Honors, while students who achieve a 3.40–3.69 GPA are named to the Deans' List.

Corfu student to transfer studies to SUNY Oswego

Tyler J. Scoins, of Hartshorn Road in Corfu, has reserved a place as a transfer student at SUNY Oswego. Fall classes will begin Aug. 29. He last studied at Genesee Community College.

Three local students named to SUNY Cortland Deans' List

Three local residents were named to the Deans' List at SUNY Cortland for the Spring 2011 semester:

Honorees must earn a grade point average of 3.3 or higher on a 4.0 scale, while completing 12 or more credit hours of classes during the semester.

SUNY Cortland was ranked by Kiplinger's among its Top 100 Best Value Colleges and Universities in the United States for a fifth consecutive year. SUNY Cortland is also home to the largest undergraduate teacher education program in the Northeast.

YMCA of Genesee County names executive director

The Board of Directors of the YWCA of Genesee County has announced the appointment of Jeanne M. Walton to the position of executive director. The board along with the Selection Committee was very impressed with her enthusiasm and sincere dedication to the
mission of the YWCA.

She is a graduate of the University of Rochester and brings more than 20 years of small business management expertise to the facility. Walton has a broad-spectrum background that yields a complete understanding of the needs of the community and how to implement processes and programs to serve the community in a new and progressive fashion

Walton says she's excited to use new and innovative means to enhance the image of the YWCA while creating programs that are designed to serve women, children and businesses in the region.

“The YWCA of Genesee County has the potential to be a premier facility in this area," Walton said.  "I will work hand-in-hand with the staff, volunteers and board of directors to accomplish this in a new and fresh way.”

Walton resides in the Town of Batavia with her two children.

BEST Center announces first grads of Building Leadership Excellence

The BEST Center at Genesee Community College is pleased to announce the first class of Building Leadership Excellence students have completed their 12-week leadership course.

Building Leadership Excellence is an intensive, hands-on program designed to develop the proven skills needed to manage, influence, create, inspire and lead organizations. Participants learn to think and act strategically, resulting in enhanced management performance and improved organizational skills in decision making, coaching, innovative problem solving and conflict resolution.

The program is designed for managers, supervisors, team leaders and future leaders. Each session is filled with real-life examples and practical techniques for achieving results. Topics covered include communicating effectively, understanding personal styles, mentoring, creative problem solving, building strong teams and several other key management issues.

"Building Leadership Excellence is a great opportunity for managers from all walks of life and industries to come together and work in an engaging and dynamic team environment," said Lina LaMattina, director at The BEST Center. "Today's organizations are looking for innovative leadership and this program offers that knowledge and skills set to the participants."

The next Building Leadership Excellence program will begin in August with a full-day kick off session from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 11. Participants will attend 10 half-day sessions from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Aug. 18 and 25, Sept. 8, 15 and 22, Oct. 6, 13 and 20, and Nov. 3 and 10.

A graduation celebration, that includes final project presentations to participants' supervisors, will take place in a full-day session on Nov. 17. This intensive, skill-building program also incorporates 10 hours of one-on-one coaching for each participant in an effort to enhance his or her ability to apply new skills in the workplace.

Genesee Community College's BEST Center (focused on Business and Employee Skills Training) is a local provider of business consulting, community training and workshops for companies of all sizes and in all industries.

Le Roy student named to Deans' List at Buffalo State

Sarah Plath, of Le Roy, has been named to the Spring 2011 School of Arts and Humanities Deans' List at Buffalo State College. She is the daughter of Al and Deborah Plath.

Dancer with integrity earns $5,000 scholarship

Claudia Germuga, a Batavia High School senior, has won a $5,000 Student of Integrity Scholarship from the Upstate New York Better Business Bureau.

She is a very accomplished dancer and art student who has received lots of recognition from her school. She is described as a student with strong convictions who is determined to set a good example for her peers.

Corfu student earns award at Catholic college in Vermont

Matthew-Sausner, of Corfu, a student at Notre Dame High School was named the 2011 recipient of the Saint Michael's College Book Award for Academic Achievement with a Social Conscience.

The award recognizes students who demonstrate a commitment to leadership in volunteer service and academic achievement. Saint Michael's, located in Burlington, Vt., was founded on the belief that serving others is part of its Catholic tradition, and through the award seeks to honor those who demonstrate the true spirit of volunteerism.

Award recipients, named at schools throughout the country, are high school juniors who are inductees of the National Honor Society or an equivalent school-sponsored honors organization. They must demonstrate a commitment to service activities in high school or community organizations, taking leadership roles in these activities.

Sausner was presented the book "First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers" (HarperCollins 2000) by Loung Ung, a 1993 Saint Michael's College graduate who has become a widely acclaimed author.

Oakfield student named to Deans' List at University of Vermont

Christopher F. Bucceri, of Oakfield, has been named to the Deans' List for the Spring 2011 semester at the University of Vermont. Bucceri is a junior Business Administration major in the School of Business Administration.

To be named to the Deans' List, students must have a grade-point average of 3.0 or better and rank in the top 20 percent of their class.

Chartered in 1791, UVM was the first college or university in the United States that did not give preference to a religious sect in its charter. As a small, comprehensive university, it blends the academic heritage of a private university with service missions in the land-grant tradition.
