Tri-Town soccer ends with a pizza party

The final games of another great season of Tri-Town Youth Athletics soccer were held on Monday night.

 

 

The Tri-Town Youth Athletics program was rejuvenated this year with the induction of new President Wade Smith and Vice President Lisa Lyons. The snack bar was always open, and fundraising helped offset rising costs allowing more families to participate than ever.

Capping off what was mostly a rain-free and fun-filled season was the traditional pizza party, this year sponsored by Breton Construction.

Alexander Moves to 5-0

Alexander picked up two recent wins to move their record to 5-0 on the season.  

Last Thursday Alexander picked up a 9-0 win over Oakfield thanks to 4 goals from Senior Forward Julia Pettys, 4 goals from Junior Midfielder Abby Shilvock, and 1 goal from Junior Midfielder Maria Dominick.  Assists in the game went to Sophomore Forward Korie Leitten (2), Sophomore Midfielder Emily Alvut, Dominick, Pettys, and Shilvock.  Senior Amanda Bender had 3 saves in goal for her 3rd win and 1st shutout of the season.  

Monday Alexander traveled to Pembroke and played a very good all around game picking up an 8-0 win.  Senior Forward Julia Pettys again lead the way with 5 goals (all in the 1st half) while Junior Midfielder Abby Shilvock, Junior Midfielder Maria Dominick, and Junior Defender Gabby Kwiatek all found the net once.  Dominick had 2 assists, Junior Defender Ashlee Wolf had 1, Sophomore Midfielder Lydia Spiotta had 1, Shilvock had 1, and Kwiatek had 1.  Senior Amanda Bender played the first portion of the game and did not have to make a save while Sophomore Jess DeAngelo played the remainder of the game and made 2 saves as they combined for the shutout.

Alexander's next game is Wednesday at home against Elba 4:30pm.

Alexander 6 Byron-Bergen 2

At Byron-Bergen Tuesday night a pair of 2-0 Genesee Region Division 1 teams squared off. The game was delayed approximately 40 minutes due to thunder after only 1:50 of the game had been played. After the break Alexander came out moving the ball well and put immediate pressure on the Bergen net. Junior Defender Gabby Kwiatek found Senior Forward Julia Pettys with a pass and Pettys beat the keeper to make it 1-0 early in the first half. Pettys would 2 more times before the half (with an assist to Junior Midfielder Maria Dominick on the last goal) to build the halftime lead to 3-0.

Senior Goalkeeper Amanda Bender made 3 fantastic stops to keep Bergen off the scoreboard in 1st half.
 

Alexander's bench was a bit short to start the game (only 3 active subs due to various circumstances) got a bit shorter as Sophomore Defender Eliza Vacanti went down with a knee injury with under 10 minutes to go in the 1st half.

After the half Alexander came out a bit slow to start but picked it right back up.  Bergen pulled a goal back to make it 3-1 but Junior Midfielder Abby Shilvock would restore the 3 goal lead just over 10 minutes into the 2nd half as she made the score 4-1.  

Bergen would again pull one back to make it 4-2 but it wouldn't take long for Alexander to have a great passing sequence that resulted in a goal by Sophomore Midfielder Lydia Spiotta (assisted by Dominick) to make it 5-2.  Pettys would net her 4th goal (assisted by Shilvock) moments later to make the final score 6-2.

Senior Amanda Bender had 8 saves in goal for her 2nd win of the year.  The defense and midfield played excellent games.

Alexander is now 3-0 while Bergen falls to 2-1.  Alexander's Varsity team hosts Oakfield Thursday at 4:30 while the JV team hosts Oakfield Saturday at 10am.

Soccer: Byron-Bergen defeats Pembroke, 7-0

Alexander Roars Back to Defeat Attica 4-2

Attica traveled to Alexander Friday afternoon to get the 2011 version of their rivalry kicked off. Attica got off to a great start jumping out to a very early 2-0 lead before the game was 8 minutes old. The first goal saw a long ball down the left side of the field and then sent to the front of the net put into the Alexander net on an own goal and minutes later a very similar play resulted in another goal for Attica to go up 2-0. With not much going their way Alexander continue to battle. After about 15 minutes of the game Alexander began to take control of the ball as they have been known to do and put a great deal more pressure on the Attica net. It finally paid off when Senior Forward Julia Pettys fired on home off an assist from Junior Midfielder Abby Shilvock to make the score 2-1. Attica had an opportunity to increase their lead from the penalty spot just a short time later but put the shot wide of the net. After the half (with the score 2-1) Alexander came out a bit sluggish for the first 5 minutes and easily could have found themselves in an even bigger hole but some strong defending by Gabby Kwiatek kept the score at 2-1. Alexander began to take control of the play once again and good things started to happen. Pettys again got free behind Attica's back line and poked a goal by the goalie to make it 2-2. Shilvock would set Pettys up moments later to make it 3-2 and with about 15 minutes left in the game Shilvock found Pettys one more time and Pettys fired another home to make it 4-2. In the 2nd half Alexander's defense stood tall lead by Juniors Kwiatek and Ashlee Wolf, Sophomore Eliza Vacanti, and Freshman Sydney Breton. Senior Amanda Bender started her first varsity game in goal and had 5 saves in net along with some great communication and direction from her position. Alexander moves to 2-0 in the league and overall while Attica falls to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the league. Alexander's next game is at Byron-Bergen Tuesday - JVs at 4:30, Varsity at 6:30.

Pembroke Boys Varsity Soccer team starts regular season at home

NOTE: Rick actually submitted this article yesterday morning and we neglected to put it on the home page. Apologies to Rick and the fans of Pembroke soccer.

The Pembroke Boys Varsity Soccer team started its regular season at home Tuesday with a league game against Kendall. After a slow first half where they gave up three goals, the Dragons came out strong in the second half, scoring their first goal of the season.

Sophomore Collin Lewis got the goal on an assist from Gabe Birkby. Coach Burch and the boys were very upbeat after the game, having played a very solid game against a strong opponent. The final score was 3-1. Next Dragons game is Friday 9/9 at 4:30 p.m. at Lyndonville. Go here to see more photos of the game.

Alexander 2 Holley 0

Holley traveled to Alexander in the opening game for both teams in the 2011 season. Alexander came away with a 2-0 win thanks to goals by Junior Midfielder Abby Shilvock and Senior Forward Julia Pettys.  Alexander was playing in a different formation with many starters in different positions due to various circumstances but were able to settle down and control the game as time wore on.  Early on the game was a bit ragged as the revamped lineup got used to playing in the positions they were in.  Alexander had a couple chances midway through the first half but was not able to convert on any.

Sophomore Korie Leitten filled in as the the goalie and had a couple nice saves in the first half to keep Holley off the board.  It was Leitten's first game at any level in goal.  

Inside the final minutes Shilvock hit a cross to Pettys on the back post and Pettys' header nearly found the corner but was cleared out by Holley.  However Alexander got the ball right back to Shilvock who hit a shot from 22 yards that found the top left corner of the net to give Alexander a 1-0 lead just before halftime.

Alexander came out in the 2nd half and began to get more of the possession and it paid off about 15 minutes in as Shilvock found Pettys with a nice through ball inside the 18 yard box and Pettys finished with her left foot low in the right side of the goal to make the score 2-0.  

Leitten continued her solid work in goal by knocking a corner kick clear later in the half to keep the score 2-0.  With about 10 minutes left Holley had a cross go off the post but it was cleared out by Junior Defender Gabby Kwiatek to again keep the score at 2-0.

It was a great all around performance by the ladies from Alexander as they got were swarming on defense to the ball and applied a lot of pressure high up the field on Holley's defense and midfield and that lead to a lot of turnovers while also breaking up Holley's possession and attack before it got into Alexander's defensive 3rd.  Leitten finished with 7 saves to get the win and shutout.

Pembroke Boys Varsity Soccer Team starts inaugural season

The newly formed Pembroke Boys Varsity Soccer Team started its season at the Holly soccer tournament Thursday night. Playing in their very first game together, the boys played with great heart against the very powerful Holly Hawks team. Despite losing to the host team by a 5-0 score, coach Aaron Burch was very happy with the boys' effort. Go here to see more photos of the game.

Girls U19 soccer team takes league championship in undefeated season

Batavia Soccer Club U19 girls soccer team finished off an undefeated season Tuesday with a championship win over Spencerport, 4-2.

The team finishes the year with a 12-0 record in the Monroe United Recreational Soccer League.

Scoring for Batavia were Randi Zakes, Kaeleigh DiSalvo and Haley Tangeman. Goalie Brooke Ranney had 11 saves.

Batavia was able to pull out a victory despite having only enough players Tuesday to cover the field. There were no substitutes available.

Players on the team, which is sponsored by Genesee Orthopedics, range in age from 14 to 19, and include four pairs of sisters.

"This year this team of old and young players really meshed," Coach Gary DiSalvo said.

The roster consisted of (players in bold participated in Tuesday's game): Kaitlyn Allen, Allison Bartholomew, Raven Bentkowski, Brenda Castaneda, Chelsea Cleveland, Kaeleigh DiSalvo, Nicole DiSalvo, Taylor Dziuba, Andrea Easton, Taylor Grazioplene, Erin Hale, Michaela Hale, Cady Hume, Jenna Hume, Jenifer Igoe, Savannah Matteson, Katie Newton, Brooke Ranney, Emily Sallome, Haley Tangeman, Bittany Wall, Morgan Zakes and Randi Zakes.

Over the course of the season, Batavia beat teams from Gates; Irondequoit; Churchville, Chili, Spencerport, Le Roy/Pavilion and Rush/Henrietta.

Local girls soccer team finishes season with 11 wins, 1 tie, and no losses against Rochester teams

When you try to put together a youth sports team here in Batavia, you're usually lucky to get more than 30 kids on board -- let alone 30 of the most most athletic kids, like in the larger districts near Buffalo and Rochester.

That's why it's all the more impressive that Batavia's U12 (under 12) soccer team won 11 out of 12 games and suffered no losses -- the exception to the winning streak being a tied game, which was played on a 92-degree evening -- during the 2011 season.

Led by Head Coach Pete Cecere, along with assistant coaches Mike Burns and Steve Moore, the team of 11- and 12-year-olds competed against several Rochester area teams, including: Penfield, Victor, Webster, Churchville-Caledonia, Livonia and Bloomfield (that was the tied game).

On Friday night, Cecere and Burns -- who, in addition to coaching the team, are also on the board of directors for Genesee Amateur Soccer Association (GASA) -- took time to answer some questions for The Batavian at Cecere's home, where the team had a pool party to celebrate their successful season.

Cecere gave a lot of credit to the girls for the effort they put into the games.

"A good core of the team played with me year-round (in preparation)," he said. "We had tremendous defense, great goalies," including Paige Hamiester, Courtney Burns and Maggie Cecere.

"Pete has taken the girls a long way," Burns said.

Up until now, U12 was more of a recreational league than anything else. Cecere, along with other GASA board members, wanted to take it up a notch.

As an assistant coach for the Batavia High School varsity team, he understood the challenge that awaited these girls as they approached the age where they would get into modified sports. Soon, they will match athletic prowess with top-notch athletes from some of the region's bigger districts, where coaches have a much larger pool of players from which to draw.

For that reason, the board wanted to take this "rec" program and make it more competitive.

"About half the girls on this team are going to be playing modified in the fall," Cecere said. "And we (the GASA board) decided that the only way they were going to get better was by swimming with the sharks."

Passionate as he was about this prospect, he was also realistic.

"I said, 'Rochester teams have 150 girls when we're beggin' to get 30, so we probably won't do very well. But the girls (our kids) will be playing now are the same girls they'll be playing in modified, and the only way they're going to be prepared is if they actually get out there and play."

To him, it was about how to make the kids better players rather than how to get more kids on the team.

So what did he and the other coaches do to guide these young ladies through this surprising streak of impressive games? Basically, the strategy involved getting them excited about the game of soccer -- including the whys and wherefores of the game's rules and mechanics.

According to Burns, "you could definitely see the spark in their eyes" as they grew in their knowledge of the game.

"One of the beauties of soccer is that it's a game that teaches itself," Cecere said. The girls were able to "learn by doing," as they say.

Cecere, for his part, made sure that there was always activity on the fields during practices.

"I'm a firm believer that there shouldn't be a lot of standing around at practice," he said. "I try to keep them moving, change up activities so they don't get bored, and be supportive. (It's important to) accentuate the positive."

And whenever he does point out any given player's mistake, he phrases it in the form of a question (for instance, "Can you tell me where you went wrong here?")

"And nine times out of 10, they know the answer."

You could say he's a tough coach. He had his girls play the tough teams, and he definitely kept them movin' during those practices. But as a coach, he is also encouraging and fun.

"He has a great rapport with the girls," Burns said. "It's fun to watch someone who can connect with them, both on a game level and on a fun level -- whether it's goofing around on the sidelines or teaching them about how the game works."

For Cecere, it's all about passion for what he does.

"There is literally nothing I like better than coaching these girls," he said.

Genesee Lancers Youth Soccer Camp offered

Children and teens interested in honing their soccer skills are encouraged to attend the Genesee Lancers Camp offered by New York Premiere Soccer.

It provides full-time professional, licensed coaches from around the world; primarily UEFA B licensed coaches from the United Kingdom and Ireland. NYPS also has a full-time technical department responsible for curriculum development and player education.

Coaches will conduct a comprehensive week-long program with your team. They will work in conjunction with the team in many of the following areas: team building, team fitness, SAQ work, team shape, team tactics as well as individual player techniques.

NYPS coaches will meet with the local coaches prior to camp to assess what areas of the game they want to work on. A curriculum will be tailored for this week based on the feedback from the coach.

The Empire Cup and College Showcase is under way at Genesee Community College this weekend.

The event brings together more than 50 colleges and universities from throughout Upstate New York for nonstop soccer.

From what I saw from my brief time at GCC today, soccer fans might enjoy attending Sunday. It's a pretty high level of competition.

The event was moved to GCC from the Batavia Sports Park on Bank Street Road because those fields remain heavily saturated from recent rains.

Drive to bring soccer back to Pembroke pitched to a new committee

Adding boys soccer to Pembroke High School's fall sports line-up needs more study -- that was the request of a couple of speakers at Tuesday's school board meeting and the decision of the board.

The board will appoint up to 16 people to a new committee to study the issue. The committee will include coaches, parents and students representing interests in not only soccer, but football, volleyball and cross-country.

The primary concern of those opposed to adding soccer is that it will detract from, if not lead to the elimination of, other sports.

Elizabeth Gabbey said if Pembroke was a Class A sport, she would fully support adding soccer and even be at all the games, but with declining enrollment in Pembroke, a Class C program, she fears even the football program could die if competing for athletes and support with soccer.

 "Are we willing to risk our football program or our volleyball program by adding a fourth sport?" she asked. "If we lose our football program, what will happen to football cheerleaders? This is an impact that not is just adding a team."

She added that boys who play soccer have club teams they can join, which still provide a path to college sports, but that's not an option open to football players.

One of the football coaches, and a teacher at Pembroke, spoke against the way the issue has been handled to this point, implying that soccer supporters were trying to push through the program without giving opposition voices a chance to raise concerns.

"I also wish to express the opinions of the thousands of concerned and unpretentious residents of this community who chose not to provoke others to bias the democratic decision making here at Pembroke with an intimidating show of force," Matthew Peterson said.

"I simply wish to have this statement read aloud to illustrate on record that many others disagree with both the means and the ends of adding an additional fall boys' sports program, and I choose to do so without the media hoopla and disruptions that surely accompany the throngs of people incited to be here tonight."

Peterson also took issue with the idea that soccer playing boys don't have an option at the high-school level in Pembroke.

"The most misunderstood idea centered on soccer is that students here greatly desire to play soccer and are being denied," Peterson said. "That assumption is entirely false! Soccer does exist here and students do have the opportunity to play from ages 5 to 19 in the spring season through PYA.

"The argument and the hidden agenda is to add another soccer team to compete in the fall, funded by the school district, and competing with and drawing from a dwindling student population. Let us not lose sight of the reality that soccer already exists at Pembroke."

Scott Birkby said he's coached both football and soccer in the district for years and knows pretty much all the boys who play either football, soccer or both, and when this issue came up, he surveyed the players to see if a boys soccer team in the fall would hurt football.

"I don't have proof," Birkby said. "I don't have the boys signatures, but I can say from my research, the net impact for the short term would be a total of only three players."

Birkby suspects volleyball might be the sport eventually phased out, which may happen anyway because of declining enrollment and the lack of nearby teams from similarly size schools. 

He said the team must often travel two and three hours for matches against larger schools.

"It's not a very successful program," he said.

Tina Curtis (dark hair in the middle of the top photo) and Rene Birkby, parents who have been leading the effort to reinstate soccer, said they were taken aback by the opposition.

Curtis said the soccer-supporting group is ready to do what it takes to ensure the program is not a financial drain on the district.

"These boys are not asking for fancy new equipment or jerseys," Curtis said. "They’re willing to donate soccer balls and wear old uniforms. They’re only desire is to play soccer and represent their school. We are willing to work with the district to raise the funds to offset this program."

Superintendent Gary Mix (inset photo) applauded the parents for thoroughly and honestly studying the issue and the students for showing leadership in bringing it forward. But he said, inevitably, somebody is going to be disappointed by whatever decision is reached.

"Any direction we go from this point forward is going to be a challenge," he said.

The district is facing a number of difficulties with declining enrollment and state budget cuts.  

Only a small minority of schools of Pembroke's size can run successful programs in all of its sports, and success is important, he said.

"It's easy for us as adults to believe that the important thing is not winning or losing, but rather students having fun," Mix said. "That's true to an extent, but a big part of the fun is experiencing success."

Alexander Wins Sectional Title

 With a 1-0 win over Bloomfield the Alexander Girl's Varsity Soccer team won the 2010 Class CC Section V title Friday night.  The only goal of the game was scored in the 4th minute by Sophomore Midfielder Abby Shilvock unassisted.  Alexander had several other opportunities to make the score bigger in the first half but was unable to do so.

In the 2nd half Alexander's defense of Seniors Savannah VanSon and Amber Finan along with Sophomore Gabby Kwiatek held strong in front of Senior Goal Keeper Hannah Wilson and held the 1-0 lead.  The midfield of Seniors Claire Hartl, Tessa Bigelow, Morgan Mattice, and Autumn Atkinson along with Shilvock contributed to the team defensive effort in the 2nd half.

Wilson came up with 2 huge saves in the final 10 minutes to keep Bloomfield off the scoreboard.

Alexander had won their previous 3 sectional contests 6-0 over Avon in the 1st round, 1-0 over Bishop Kearney in the quarterfinals and 4-0 over Naples in the Semi-Final.

Alexander moves on to play Marion in the Class C State Qualifier game Tuesday the 9th at McAvoy Park in Rochester at 6pm.  The winner of that game will advance to play Holland from Section VI in the state quarterfinals which are Saturday at 2pm at GCC.

GCC's women's soccer and volleyball teams having a great season

For several weeks now, the Genesee Community College Women's Soccer Team has been No. 1 in the nation!

It's been an exciting season for both soccer and volleyball at the college, and this week continues the thrill as both teams head off to national and district competitions, respectively.

The Soccer Team left Wednesday for a second consecutive NJCAA National Tournament appearance, held this year at Prince George's Community College in Maryland.

Ranked as the top NJCAA Women's Soccer team in the nation for several weeks, they have great expectations for ttoday's game against Ocean Community College.

Last Saturday at Tompkins County Community College, GCC's Women's Soccer Team (17-1-2) defeated Mohawk Valley Community College (12-4-3) 3-2 in an exciting overtime win to earn the NJCAA Region IIIA Title.

As 2010 Region III Award Winners, GCC also captured other major honors with Head Coach Kelly Gillow named NJCAA Region III Coach of the Year, and sophomore captain Jessie Jaszko (Batavia)  named NJCAA Region III Player of the Year.

The All-Tournament soccer team players from Genesee included: Jessie Jaszko (Batavia), Adele Zeh (Nunda), and Ali Cashmore (Akron). The Tournament MVP was Catherine Mucha (Dalton).

"It has been an amazing year with the team consistently coming together both on the offense and defense," Gillow said. "We are looking forward to Thursday's event and continuing the synergy in another heated game."

Inside the gym, another team of incredible athletes from Genesee have also been making a name for themselves.

Genesee's Women's Volleyball team hosted Mercyhurst NE in the Region III, Division II Championship finals last week and won the title beating Mercyhurst in three with scores of 25-13, 25-14, and 25-10.

Genesee (34-8) got off to a good start with Mikela Caseria's (Mililani, HI) crisp serving and 12 assists. Genesee also got good production from Sarah Ward (Rochester) producing 14 kills and five digs. While Maria Antsupova (Ozersk, Russia) and Kristie Barger (Lima) took control of the first two games with eight kills/two aces and 14 digs, respectfully.

Mercyhurst got off to a great start in the third game rallying to a 7-2 lead, whereupon Kristie Barger entered the game with great serving to put GCC back into the game. Mercyhurst again took the lead and with GCC down 7-8 Shelly Fuller (Trumansburg) entered the game and served 12 consecutive points to place GCC comfortably in the lead.

Fuller also contributed 12 assists and four aces in the match. Maria Anstupova finished the match by serving two aces. Region III, Division II All-Tournament team honors went to Paige Tilert, Mikela Caseria, Maria Anstupova and Sarah Ward.

In addition, Sarah Ward was named the Tournament MVP.

The Women's Soccer Team will be playing in the district-wide tournament this weekend with their sights on heading off to the Nationals in Wisconsin later this month.

Alexander wins final 3 games

 Alexander finished the regular season 13-1-2, 11-1-1 in the league with 3 wins in their final 3 games.  Alexander beat Byron-Bergen 3-1, Batavia 3-1, and Pembroke 6-1.  In those 3 wins Julia Pettys had 9 goals (3 in Bergen, 2 in Batavia, and 4 in Pembroke), Abby Shilvock had 2 (2 in Pembroke) and Claire Hartl had 1 in the Batavia game.

Alexander is currently 2nd in the Class CC sectional bracket but can move up to 1st if Bloomfield drops their final game tonight.  

Alexander won the Genesee Region Division 1 Title in the game against Byron-Bergen and finished 1 point behind Wheatland-Chili in the overall Genesee Region Points Race.

Sectionals start next Tuesday, if Alexander remains in 2nd place they will play Avon in the first round.

Attica 1 Alexander 0

 Alexander's record dropped to 10-1-2 on the season overall and 9-1-1 in the league as they dropped a 1-0 game to Attica at home Tuesday.  Despite dominating possession of the ball and only allowing 3 shots while taking 19 of their own Alexander was unable to put the ball in the Attica net and fell 1-0 thanks to a goal on a rebound off the crossbar by Attica.

Alexander's last home game is Thursday against Bergen at 4:30.  Alexander remains in 1st place in the division by 2 games with 2 games to go.  Any win or tie will give them the division title (or a loss or tie by Attica) in the final 2 games.

Alexander 2 Oakfield 0

 Alexander remains in the ranks of the unbeaten at 9-0-2 with a 2-0 win in Oakfield Wednesday night.  Alexander jumped out to a 1-0 lead as Senior Midfielder Claire Hartl put a corner kick from Senior Midfielder Autumn Atkinson 13 minutes into the game.  Alexander went up 2-0 8 minutes into the 2nd half as Junior Forward Julia Pettys finished off a pass from Senior Forward Megan Schmieder.

Senior Goal Keeper Hannah Wilson made 6 saves for her 4th shutout of the season.

Alexander moves to 9-0-2 on the season 8-0-1 in the league.  Alexander travels to Holley Saturday at 6:30 for a big division 1 game.

GCC men's soccer putting together dominant season

I took in a little GCC men's soccer this evening. The Cougers beat Corning 5-0 for the team's 13th win against one loss on the season.

Genesee Region Girls Soccer Update

 Here are the Genesee Region Standings up to this point (not everyone has played the same number of games):

Division 1:

Alexander 7-0-1 15 points

Attica 6-1 12 points

Holley 5-2 10 points

Bergen 2-5-1 5 points

Pembroke 2-5-1 5 points

Division 2

Wheatland-Chili 6-0-2 14 points

Oakfield 2-4-3 7 points

Kendall 3-3 6 points

Division 1 is still up for grabs, Attica and Holley are not out of it as both still have a game against Alexander.  Division 2 is all but over as barring any major collapse by Wheatland no one can make up the ground that would be ahead of them.  Alexander and Wheatland will battle for the overall GR crown (which is actually mythical as there is no actual trophy or title).  With Division 1 and 2 having the same number of teams this year they all play an equal number of games.

What I think will be interesting is all-league.  The league appears very top heavy this year, who makes all-league will be something to take a look at at the end of the year.
