On the beat should be
On the beat should be eliminated from this site because it is worthless and meaningless other than to ridicule people. Does anyone really care about this crap. Couple of people had a fight and a traffic violation, Didn't anyones cow or dog run away or how about a cat up a tree or a parking ticket - no speeding tickets even come on there had to be a speeding ticket.
I myself have left the
I myself have left the commenting alone in this section. It would not hurt my feelings any if this section disappeared.Although some have remarked about freedom of speech and so forth.I see this as a community site and maybe there should be a vote.[like they do in a democratic system]
I would still read the news here either way,but once again would not miss the On the beat section.
In December, "Police Blotter"
In December, "Police Blotter" was the number 1 search term on the site. When I'm out in the community and meet people who have never seen the site, often among their first questions is, "Do you have police blotter." And for those who know the site, they has why we don't have more blotter.
Not everybody who wants blotter is going to speak up and defend our running it.
The Daily News runs the same press releases we do. They've been doing it long before The Batavian came along.
Just about every newspaper in the country runs reports of arrests and incidents of some kind: Why? Because readers want it.
We're not going to stop running it, either. It's important community news.
I call BS. Cut it out, you
I call BS. Cut it out, you know its not news and arrests resulting from family argruments and traffic violations are definitely not "important communtiy news". Posting this type of rag mag gossip fodder cheapens the site. By the way did Britney get in any trouble over the weekend? .
DWI charges are not traffic
DWI charges are not traffic violations. They are either misdemeanor or felony criminal charges. We will, however, report traffic violations if they are made in conjunction with a driving while intoxicated arrest.
If you are going to put out a
If you are going to put out a police blotter,Shouldn't you also follow the case to the end and print what goes on in the court room,,and how these cases end..There are alot of falsely accused ...That when they get to court it is thrown out..Just be fair to all..
you should see the papers
you should see the papers down here in south rural OH. they publish the results of health code inspections at restaurants and schools. if they find rats, we'll know. any and all code violations are published. wonder who has the nastiest place in batavia? they publish stories about why fire alarms went off. don't plan on hiding your bankruptcy or divorce filings either. oh yeah, if you get a speeding ticket, we all get to see how fast of a driver you are. well, i guess a local newspaper is a public record...get er done! lol
You folks should consider
You folks should consider that an individual could loose his job, because you and the daily snooze think its so much fun to post this nonsence. All this is really about preying on people's misfortune and ever so slight indiscretions to sell papers and increase the number of hits you get on the internet site.
Richard, the mere act of
Richard, the mere act of getting arrested, especially on a felony charge, can have a major impact on all aspects of a person's life, not the least of which includes employment. Our publishing or not isn't going to change that. Ditto the Daily.
I reject totally the notion that this is preying on people's misfortune. It's news. It's news that most people in the community want to know about. People want to know not for curiosity sake because these alleged crimes impact them, their families, their neighborhoods and their job sites. The accused also have a right to have a source of factual information in the public about the allegations, rather than be subjected merely to misinformed gossip.
And these are hardly slight indiscretions. This are of crimes that the police judged serious enough to put out press releases on. It gets into a very sticky ethical territory if we start passing judgments over which Sheriff's Department and Police Department press releases we should publish or not.
WE heavily debated this last
WE heavily debated this last time.I would say that anyone with CLASS would not make a public comment on any other ON THE BEAT REPORT.I'm not one to hit someone when their down and also believe in freedom of the press at the same time.
Taking away the blotter would
Taking away the blotter would be saying that some of these issues are "normal" and should be left to those involved to deal with
Harrassment and intoxication are "evils" needing to be understood
If you believe that then you cannot risk allowing things to be "swept under the rug" making people search out what may not be there to find which means less people searching which means even less understanding
If you ask me these are laws that have been broken
Why do we have laws? This should be the end of the argument IMO
"public" or "social" laws for public safety
Break a law you break public trust
Everyone suffers to some degree .. not just the other party that is involved in such things as domestics etc
therefore
Everyone should be notified
I'm not against taking away personal comments
on individuals
named in the blotter
Laz, Did you call the Town of
Laz,
Did you call the Town of Batavia to get a copy of that 40 year old you were so concerned about?
Knowing all the details are still being discussed, are you in principle, in favor of consolidation?
Maybe their lives haven't
Maybe their lives haven't been impacted by drunk driving, abuse, violence etc. If you don't want your name in the blotter then stay out of trouble. Yeah people make mistakes...big deal, I bet if it were your own name then you wouldnt want it published, but thats the price you pay. Get a grip people....It's public information. You all stopped long enough to read it, right?
i'm all 4 public record being
i'm all 4 public record being such, but it'd be nice if the powers that be here (ahem) close down the comment section on crimes. all are assumed innocent until proven guilty. let the judge and jury do their thing. what if we had a current jurist commenting on a case they were judging? hmmmmmm. ramifications of mistrial? fun tangent eh? oh well. when the show's over, only judge you have to worry about is your god you believe in.
