The River Street Bridge is closed today as part of an ongoing repair process. The bridge surface was already milled and today workers will do more work to prepare the bridge for resurfacing. Resurfacing will be completed next week, which will wrap up the repair work.
Just to clarify, the bridge
Just to clarify, the bridge will be reopened at 4 PM today. Temporary closures will occur off and on again until Monday, August 13th as asphalt tack coat is applied to the deck surface, new urethane joints are installed and the deck is repaved.
The bridge joints were replaced to help prevent salt water from further deteriorating the underside of the concrete bridge beams. The deck was milled, spot-repaired and will be resurfaced to give motorists a smoother ride across the bridge.
The River Street bridge was constructed in 1974 and in need of structural repairs. The bridge will be submitted by the County this fall for inclusion on the State Transportation Improvement Plan for more thorough federally-funded repairs sometime in 2016 or 2017. The current repairs are being made to extend the life of the existing bridge until that time.
County Highway apologizes for the inconvenience to motorists, but given the type of repairs and the short distance from the bridge to Route 5 there is not much room to backup cars with a standard lane closure without causing a major standstill affecting both Routes 5 and 63.
Thanks!
