Docent from Explore Buffalo speaks at HLOM on 'Abolitionism in Buffalo in 1843'

Friday, Feb. 28th at 7 p.m. Holland Land Office Museum will welcome John Fagant (docent from Explore Buffalo) to talk about Abolitionism in Buffalo, 1843.

His talk will discuss how in August of 1843, Buffalo became the center of the national abolitionist movement.

POSTPONED: Raffle and fundraiser at GO ART! for its Executive Director Gregory Hallock

POSTPONED; TO BE RESCHEDULED AT A LATER DATE TO BE DETERMINED: The executive director of the Genesee-Orleans Regional Arts Council -- GO ART! -- is battling a rare form of cancer. There will be a raffle and fundraiser on Friday, March 27, to help Gregory Hallock and his family defray medical expenses.

The community is encouraged to help support him and his family during this difficult time.

'Downton Abbey' -- the movie -- is showing at Richmond library

Meat Raffle for BHS varsity baseball and softball teams at Slomba Hall

A Meat Raffle to support Batavia High School varsity baseball and softball teams will be held starting at 5 p.m. on Friday, March 6 at Ascension Parish's Slomba Hall, 17 Sumner St., Batavia.

There will be many raffles and prizes, too.

Tickets are $10 and includes a food buffet and beverage. Presale tickets. If any remain, they will be sold at the door on a first-come, first-serve basis.

City Sixth Ward meeting on Crime Task Force and public safety

There will be a Sixth Ward meeting held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 4th in the Council Board Room on the second floor of City Hall.

Council Member Rose Mary Christian would like to discuss progress of the Crime Task Force and opportunities to organize a neighborhood group to design and improve residents' safety.

'The Angel & The Warrior' -- Free lecture at GCC about Emily Martin and Gen. Emory Upton, presented by Sharon and Don Burkel

"The Angel & The Warrior" is the title of a presentation about Emily Martin and General Emory Upton that will be given at Genesee Community College at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 5.

The public is invited to hear Sharon and Don Burkel tell the story of Emily and Emory's brief and tragic relationship through their personal letters and photographs. It will take place in Room T102, in the Conable Technology Building at the college, 1 College Road, Batavia.

Deadline to buy tickets for Zonta Club's 'Jungle Safari Basket Raffle' at the Downs in March

The Zonta Club of Batavia-Genesee County will hold a "Jungle Safari Basket Raffle" on Saturday, March 7 to raise money for the club's service projects and scholarships.

It will take place at Batavia Downs Gaming & Hotel, 8315 Park Road, Batavia.

Doors open at 10:30 a.m. Lunch is at noon and the raffle begins at 1 o'clock.

Presale tickets only -- $30. Must be purchased by Feb. 26.

Alexander Fire Department's annual Valentine's Steak Dinner & Dance, RSVP, limited tickets

The Alexander Fire Department is hosting their annual Valentine’s Steak Dinner & Dance on Saturday, Feb. 15th, at their Recreation Hall at 10708 Alexander Road, Alexander. 

There will be an open bar from 6:30 to 9 p.m. with dinner at 7 o'clock.

Music by a favorite local band Red Creek!

CANCELLED: Alexander Fire Department hosts Sunday breakfast -- theme is 'Breakfast with Bunny'

The Alexander Fire Department will be hosting monthly All You Can Eat Firemen’s Breakfasts on two upcoming Sundays at their Recreation Hall, 10708 Alexander Road, Alexander.

Time is from 8 a.m. to noon on these dates: CANCELLED March 29, and April 26.  

Buffet style breakfast will include: pancakes, French toast, scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, home fries, biscuits with gravy, fruit, real maple syrup, coffee, tea, juice and milk.

Adults $11; children 5-12 years $6; under 5 free.

The Cornell Cooperative Extension of Genesee County Board of Directors will meet at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 30.

The meeting will be held at the Extension Center at 420 E. Main St. in Batavia and is open to the public.

Genesee Valley Educational Partnership Nursing Program Open House for LPN and CNA, at GVEP Batavia Campus

The Genesee Valley Educational Partnership’s Practical Nursing Program will hold an Open House from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 22, for anyone interested in learning more about upcoming classes for the Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) or Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) programs.

The Open House will be held at the Genesee Valley Educational Partnership’s Batavia Campus at 8250 State Street Road, Batavia.

LPN and CNA instructors will be available to meet and speak with potential students.

Hands-on art demo at GO ART! -- make your own soft bunny sculpture

The Batavia Society of Artist is hosting Artist Terry Weber from 7 to 9 p.m. on Feb. 11th at GO ART! in Seymour Place, 201 E. Main St., Batavia.

She will be having a hands-on felting demonstration of a resting rabbit. Non-members welcome for a $5 fee.

The demo, will actually be a hands on class, where you'll make your own soft sculpture that you get to take home with you.

Pembroke voters vote in Jr./Sr. High School Library on capital improvement plans Unified Vision 2020

After three years of planning involving more than 1,000 people and stakeholder groups, voters in the Pembroke Central School District will decide Thursday (Jan. 16) on comprehensive plans for capital improvements called "Unified Vision 2020."

Voting will take place from noon until 9 p.m. in the Jr./Sr. High School Library, located at 8750 Alleghany Road (routes 5 and 77), Corfu.

There will be two propositions on Thursday's ballot and Prop. 1 must pass in order for Prop. 2 to pass.

Democratic candidates visit with voters at Moonjava Cafe

Democratic candidates for Congress and NYS Senate will visit Batavia to talk with voters on Thursday, Jan. 30. 

The Genesee County Democratic Committee invites the community to meet candidates for Congress and NYS Senate District 61.

Candidates including Nate McMurray, Joan Seamans, Kim Smith, and Jacqualine Berger will join us from 7 to 9 p.m. at Moonjava Cafe, 56 Harvester Ave.
