Libertarian candidate for governor Larry Sharpe speaks at T.F. Brown's in Batavia

New York gubernatorial candidate Larry Sharpe (L), will meet with citizens of Batavia on Monday, May 7, to share concerns and discuss solutions to New York-specific business challenges including regulations, taxes, and the overall business climate.

“We need to unleash the individual New Yorker, who loves their state and wants to bring value to their community,” said Sharpe, a former business owner and leadership management consultant. “We must stop limiting them and start encouraging them to be innovators in their communities. I’m excited to hear what they have to say.”

Alexander Fie Department holds Mother's Day chicken BBQ at its Rec Hall

The Alexander Fire Department will be having a Mother's Day Chicken BBQ (Sunday, May 13) at the Recreation Hall, 10708 Alexander Road, Attica.

Dinners will be available starting at 11:30 a.m. until sold out. Each $10 dinner includes half chicken, baked potato, baked beans, cornbread and dessert.

Dinners are for take out only.

'Mark Twain Live!' performed by WKBW-TV's Mike Randall at Stone Church in Bergen

Mike Randall will perform his one-man act "Mark Twain LIve!" at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 17, at the Stone Church Presbyterian Church in Bergen.

Cost is $15 for adults; $12 for seniors 65+; and $10 for students.

May 7 is deadline to RSVP for 2018 Republican Women's Club Spring Breakfast

The Genesee County Women's Republican Club will host the 2018 Spring Breakfast from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 19, at Ascension Parish Hall in Batavia.

Enjoy a full breakfast buffet catered by the Dibble Family Center.

Cost is $20 per member and $25 per nonmember; you can sign up for membership at the event.

The parish hall is located at 15 Sumner St.

This year's "Caring for America Charity" is the Alzheimer's Association.

Richmond Memorial Library's budget vote and trustee election takes place from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, May 3rd. Gregg McAllister is running for the board seat unopposed.
 
Voting takes place in the Library's Gallery Room.

Any registered voter residing in the Batavia City School District is eligible to vote.

Prescription Drug Take Back Day -- bring your pills for safe disposal

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 28, Genesee County law enforcement agencies and the Drug Enforcement Administration will give the public an opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.

Meet Genesee Chorale Composer-in-Residence and enjoy final rehearsal of world premier of 'The Waking' at free event at St. James Church, Batavia

The world premier of "The Waking," a composition by Composer-in-Residence of the Genesee Chorale Daniel Baldwin, is happening next month.

Baldwin will be available for a meet-and-greet with the public beforehand at 6 p.m. on Monday, April 30, at St. James Church on Main Street in Batavia. An open final rehearsal by the Genesee Chorale of “The Waking” will follow at 7 o'clock. It is free to attend.

'Spring into Nature' at Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge, free shuttle service available

Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) in Alabama is hosting its 34th annual Spring into Nature celebration from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 28. This year a free shuttle service will be running between three parking lots and the Visitor Center to alleviate construction and parking complications.

Ferrellgas in Batavia hosts annual Customer Appreciation Day, $5 grill tank fills, basket and prize raffles

Ferrellgas in Batavia is hosting its annual Customer Appreciation Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 12. It is located at 655 Ellicott St.

Grill tank fills -- unlimited quantity -- will be $5.

All attendees will be eligible for drawings. No purchase necessary to enter the drawing.

"On-site raffles will be huge this year," says management.

They include Omaha steaks, a TV, propane prizes for new and existing customers, and lots of basket raffles for kids and adults alike.

Genesee Valley Wind Ensemble’s Spring concert at O-A auditorium

The Genesee Valley Wind Ensemble will perform its 2018 Spring Concert in the auditorium of Oakfield-Alabama Central School beginning at 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 29. The school is located at 7001 Lewiston Road, Oakfield.

Conductors are: Mark Flynn, guest conductor, high school band director at Akron Central School; Dan Klinczar, member conductor, elementary band director at Alexander Central School; and Philip J. Briatico, conductor and founder of the GVWE, Warsaw Central School.

Scrap Metal Drive in shelter parking lot for Volunteers for Animals

On the weekend of June 2-3 there will be a Scrap Metal Drive in the shelter parking lot at 3841 W. Main Street Road in the Town of Batavia. It runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days.

Proceeds from the Scrap Metal Drive will benefit the Volunteers for Animals and the homeless pets in the Genesee County Animal Shelter.

Guest Bartending Fundraiser at the North Pole for the Genesee County Animal Shelter

On Cinco de Mayo there's a Guest Bartending Fundraiser at the North Pole Restaurant & Party House to benefit the Volunteers for Animals and the homeless pets at the Genesee County Animal Shelter.

The North Pole is located at 243 S. Swan St. in Batavia. The fundraiser will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 5.

All TIPS collected will be donated to the Volunteers for Animals at the shelter. So if you want to hoist a glass for a good cause, this is a good option.

The 4th Thursday of each month, from 9-10:30 a.m. we will be having a sit down conversation with coffee and pastries learning about historical and cultural characters and events.
 
This month we are going to begin our discussion with how Genesee County contributed to World War I.

Fifth annual Cystic Fibrosis Margarita Run is Cinco de Mayo in Pavilion

The fifth annual Cystic Fibrosis Margarita Run will take place in Pavilion at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 5th.
 
This 5.5K walk/run is intended for all ages and paces and features a fast, flat, looped route.
 
Race registration begins at the Pavilion Fire Department at 7:30 a.m.

Ribbon-cutting ceremony and Grand Opening of 'The ART of Mandy' art studio on Main Street in Le Roy

Local artist and art instructor Mandy Humphrey opens an art studio in Le Roy in May. It is located at 20 Main St.

The studio, called The ART of Mandy, will be offering weekly classes for ages 2 through adult. Classes include: drawing, painting, photography, ceramics and more. Mandy also hosts on and off-site paint parties, private and corporate events and birthday parties.

Oakfield Historical Society hosts season Grand Opening, coincides with 20-year anniversary, reenactors will be there

On Saturday, April 21, the Oakfield Historical Society hosts its Grand Opening from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the 2018 season, which also marks its 20-year anniversary.

"Oakfield-Alabama Schools Through the Years" is the year's theme and the corresponding exhibit will debut, plus there will be other new exhibits and updated favorites.

Groveland Station performs free concert at Richmond library -- enjoy 'Americana fiddle-boogie band' music

Groveland Station will perform music, free, at the Richmond Memorial Library on Thursday, May 3.

Concert starts at 7 p.m. in the Reading Room. The library is at 19 Ross St., Batavia.

Groveland Station is an Americana fiddle-boogie band who chase a sound that combines big fat acoustic grooves and tasty fiddle chops. Their style mixes swing, country, blues, bluegrass, and jazz.
