Registration begins for Fall Story Times at Richmond Memorial Library

Fall Story Times at in Richmond Memorial Library Children's Room will begin the week of Oct. 13. Registration will begin Monday, Oct. 5. The library is located at 19 Ross St. in the City of Batavia. Hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m..

Free 12-week course begins this week for families and caregivers of adults with mental illness

National Alliance on Mental Illness, Rochester chapter, is conducting a free Family-to-Family course in Batavia every Tuesday evening from Sept. 15th to Dec. 8th. (There is no class on Tuesday, Oct. 20th.)

The NAMI Family-to-Family Education Program is a 12-week course for families and caregivers of adults living with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety disorders, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and Borderline Personality Disorder.

Each class will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Genesee ARC Community Center, 38 Woodrow Road, Batavia.

Reel Discussion at Richmond library: 'Birdman' starring Michael Keaton

Genesee County Sheriff's Employees Golf Tournament to benefit Vets Support Network

The 2015 Genesee County Sheriff's Employees Association Golf Tournament will be held Saturday, Oct. 3, at Terry Hills Golf Course. Cost $70 per player and includes lunch and dinner.

Proceeds go to help the Genesee Veterans Support Network.

Tournament registration begins at noon and play is expected to end around 5 p.m., followed by dinner.

100th Anniversary of GC Park & Forest -- 'ForestFest' is Aug. 29th

What do live birds of prey, lumberjack sports, and cake have in common? They are all part of the celebration as Genesee County Forest turns 100 years old!

Join us on Saturday, Aug. 29th, as we mark the 100th anniversary of New York State’s Oldest County Forest with guided hikes, games, crafts, special guests, Timbersports demonstrations, a live raptor presentation by Wild Wings, and a very special dedication and commemorative tree planting by Parks Supervisor Paul Osborn.

Gala fundraiser at GCC for Justice for Children Advocacy Center

Kiwanis Club of Batavia is getting ready for its fifth annual gala fundraiser, Bidding on a Brighter Future, at 5:30 p.m., Sept. 19, at Genesee Community College.

This event, which is Kiwanis Club’s long-term project, has brought in more than $150,000 over the last four years. The funds will be used to secure a permanent location for the Justice for Children Advocacy Center (JFCAC). The gala features live entertainment, specialty raffles, basket and silent auctions, live auction, and a great menu.

It’s time for a fun family night on Friday, Aug. 7, at 6 p.m. at the Corfu Free Library, 7 Maple Ave. in Corfu. A recently released and very popular animated family flick will be shown in the Children’s Room and free popcorn will be served.

Free history lecture at GCC: 'Recalling Reconstruction: The Ugly Story of a Splendid Failure'

•    In "Recalling Reconstruction: The Ugly Story of a Splendid Failure," Derek Maxfield, GCC associate professor of History, will discuss the end of the Civil War and how President Lincoln counseled his generals not to gloat in victory and to avoid bitterness and animosity. "Let 'em up easy," he said. Lincoln did not live to oversee the Reconstruction, which wound up taking a dark turn.

Pavilion Clothing Closet open for residents to get free clothes

The “Pavilion Clothing Closet” has found a new home and we would like to tell you all about it. 

The Clothing Closet is a place where any Pavilion Central School student and their family can go to acquire gently used and sometimes “new” clothing, shoes and outerwear for FREE. Very generous community members have and continue to donate to the Closet, and it is very much appreciated.

Worldwide synchronized breastfeeding event at Jerome Center - 'Global Big Latch On'

Local health care organizations United Memorial Medical Center and Oak Orchard Health will be hosting an event for breastfeeding mothers that will attempt to break international records as well as raise awareness on the important health benefits of breastfeeding. Pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers and their babies are invited to attend the event that will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Jerome Center in Batavia on Friday, July 31.

Gospel bluegrass band 'The Punches Family' performs at Batavia Assembly of God Church

The Gospel bluegrass family band -- The Punches Family -- will perform at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 7, at the Batavia Assembly of God Church, located at 24 N. Spruce St.

There will be a free will offering taken at the concert.

Community Action of Orleans & Genesee celebrates 50th Anniversary with Open House, music & food, bring the kids - playground is open!

In recognition of its 50th Anniversary, Community Action of Orleans & Genesee invites the public to a Tent Event / Open House from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday Aug. 14 at their location at 5073 Clinton Street Road, Batavia.

Oakfield Free Movie in the Park: Grease

All are welcome to come watch the classic film musical "Grease" on our huge screen in the big pavilion  Wear your favorite neon attire and relive the 1950's with us. Oakfield Betterment Committee is providing this event free of charge to children of all ages. Tonight's Alexander Community Movie ('Sponge Out of Water') at 9:30 will be shown under a tent in the beer stand

"I wanted to let everybody know that the scheduled community movie July 10 at 9:30 p.m.) was still going on tonight at the Alexander Firemen's Grounds on Route 98 South of the Village of Alexander. (It's the animated Spongebob Squarepants' movie "Sponge Out of Water.") Even though we have received rain almost all day. We have decided to move the movie screen in under the tent in the beer stand.

Picnic at Genesee County Park for Genesee Justice supporters; RSVP

As a way of thanking all those who make our community a better place to live, Genesee Justice will host a picnic in Pavilion A at Genesee County Park from noon to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 21.

Hot dogs, mac-n-cheese, potato salad, green salad, and name tags will be provided. Bring a dish to pass if you like. Hope for sunshine!

Tonight's Batavia Concert Band show moved to GCC's Stuart Steiner Theatre

This evening, Wednesday, July 1, the Batavia Concert Band's opening concert of the 2015 season will be at Genesee Community College's Stuart Steiner Theatre, rather than in Centennial Park. This change has been made due to uncertain weather conditions.

Tonight's concert features David Keller conducting a full contingent of musicians performing works from many periods and representing many styles. "Guaranteed to please an audience of all ages" says Dave, a veteran of 25 years performing around the world with U.S. military bands.
